In Middleburg, FL, Tina Marie Canterbury a forty-two year-old wife and mother of two boys and owner of two two year-old full blooded red nosed pit bulls, was fatally mauled by the dogs she raised. Her 21 year-old son tried to come to his mother’s rescue of the seemingly unprovoked attack; he sustained a wound to the throat while another son called 911 to alert them to the emergency. A family friend shot his 9mm handgun at the dogs, one got away and the other was hit and as the police arrived, the sheriff shot it dead. The escaped dog was later tracked down to a wooded area where is was shot and killed. The owners were described as responsible having safeguarded their property and were never involved in any incidents of violence against or by these dogs. Mr. Canterbury, the husband and father was away on business when this incident occured and has rushed home to be with his family. I am an animal lover, dogs, cats, etc, and I realize that there are two schools of thoughts regards pit bulls, as most regard them as violent animals not meant for families. I happen to have friends who have pit bulls that are menacing looking, but are very sweet and friendly and I have other friends who couldn’t pay me to stay in a room with their animal. Pit bulls were once upon a time considered a good family dog, but after years of breeding with other pit bulls that were trained to fight, there has been a major problem as well as the general abuse of the dog. By it’s nature, it has the predisposition for violence more so than a yorkie or a beagle, so I don’t diminsh this fact. But something else to consider is that dogs, especially the pit bull, are prone to brain dysfunction which causes the dog to attack thinking it is being attacked and any other related siblings will attack in like due to pack mentality. Do your research and weigh all options before purchasing or rescuing a pit bull. Read

i am a pitbull lover and im sorry for the lost mrs.tina and her family. but all pit bulls R NOT MEAN so that one promblem happen dont look bad at it but i could unstand for the family cause they had them from puppys but did any one look at any problem of the dogs they mit had rabies. but ive had them all my life and not had any problem out of them i have one that is a red nose pit and she is 15 yrs. old and the gental daog around kids and people i even take her to nurse home and they love her. im very sorry for the lost of mrs.tina
To Litissa Mason: Before she was killed by her pit bulls, Tina Canterbury said the same thing that you’re saying. I trained and handled dogs in the military and later in Alaska and I can say, with first-hand knowledge, that pit bulls are NOT normal dogs. They do NOT operate on the pack mentality in that they will attack an alpha dog in a pack and no other dog breed will do that. This is a result of breeding to ensure that a dog that has fought and been defeated by a dog will fight that same dog again. Pit bulls will turn on an owner just as quickly and without provacation as it will turn on an alpha dog in a pack, no matter how well trained or how well that owner has raised and treated the dog. So far this year in the United States, 19 people have been killed by dogs and pit bulls were responsible for 11 of those deaths even though pits make up a very small percentage of the dog population. After working with few pit bulls and learning first-hand that they are not like other dogs, I refused to work with them and I discourage anyone from owning pit bulls – especially if there are children in the home.
To klondike sam: I agree with you that pitbulls are not like other dogs. I have a one year old pitbull that i adopted from the human society and i absolutely love her they have a sense of humor like no other dog breed. She IS CONSTANTLY Making me laugh and smile and we are inseparable. Why punish the breed for a few bad dogs. when i was younger i got bit by a black lab why dont we ban this breed to. the only reason pitbulls are recognized as viscious dogs is because they are used for dogfighting. I have a one year old cousin who is over all the time and he loves my pitbull they are always together and i will not have people put a breed ban on these dogs because of a few ignorant people in this world
