The RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH is strongly opposed to same-sex marriage and on June 24-29, the Bishops' Council will meet to express it's protest against gay marriage.

During a press conference in Moscow, Archbishop Pheophan says: "They often ignore the most important aspects – the right of a human being bestowed on him by God not to corrupt individuality and society on the whole.”

“Same-sex marriage will never be acceptable from the point of view of the Orthodox and Christian point of view. This is a violation of the ethical and moral right bestowed on us by God, and we have to stand firmly for that.”

Back in December 2003, the US Episcopal Church appointed an openly gay man, Gene Robinson, to bishop. The Moscow Patriarchy was not happy about it and suspended its relations with the US church. Ah, good old Russia.

Right now, same-sex marriages are legal in The Netherlands (was the first country to do so back in 2001) Belgium, Canada, Norway, South Africa, Spain, and two states in the US, Massachusetts and California. And as of June 2008, Norway became the first country in the world to allow gays to adopt and receive artificial insemination on the same terms as heterosexuals as well as recognizing same-sex marriage on equal terms.
