I have no qualms with Dell, even as a Apple fan. Dell does their thing and they do it well. But I have to wonder what a company is thinking when they spend time, resources and money in a market place to which they have absolutely no chance of survival in.
Dell has announced that they will once again jump into the mobile media game with a MP3 player (not pictured). Dell failed at this the first go round, yet after seeing Creative Zen take its rightful place in the 99cent store (exaggeration) and Microsoft stick its tail between its legs and go to Zune radio silence, Dell is still willing to jump in the ring with the iPod.
This is so silly that I bet there are employess and middle management tossing pencils in the air while discussing how they know this is going to bring them down again and force another round of lay offs.
Okay maybe it won't be that bad, Dell says that they intend to keep a tight integration with the new player. Software that syncs with portables and a music store. All those things that Apple does better than anyone, all those things that others keep trying and keep failing at. But maybe Dell can pull it off.
All good things come to an end, so there will be a point in which Apple will become susceptible, and the iPod and iTunes is no longer the choice among choices. But that time is not now, nor will it be September, when Dell plans to release their new Player.
My advice, not that I'm qualified to give any, but guys, create something brand new and seriously hot. Knock it out of the park and make Apple and others have to copy what you did. You have to realize, at this point, the public just sees these things as iPod and iTunes rip offs. It's like high school, if you're not wearing what's hot, you're not.
