Is it just me, or is the E3 electronic game convention currently happening in LA a big letdown?
After hearing from the "big guns", Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony from the E3 Expo, I was not all that impressed with anything any of them had to offer.
Microsoft said they'll be getting Netflix for the XBox360. Okay, but savvy watchers saw (or should have seen) that handwriting on the wall more than a year ago when Reed Hastings CEO of Netflix joined Microsoft's board. I wasn't so much surprised as I was wondering what took so long? I mean, you don't think he joined the board "just because" do you?
They also pre-announced a new system configuration for the XBox360 that will lower the price of the current 20GB model. Yawn.
Nintendo rubbed everyone else's nose in the success of the Wii but there "big news" was an attachment to make the Wiimote more accurate and a microphone for chatting while playing the Wii. And? Well, not much else really. A snowboarding game that uses the Wiiboard and a music game. No refresh of the DS Lite, not even cosmetically, was discussed.
Still, no one asked the most basic million dollar question of Nintendo America: Why, after a year and a half, is the Wii still next to impossible to find in stores anywhere? It's been long enough Nintendo! Regular readers know I've been asking this question here and here for almost a year now without getting a solid answer.
And Sony? I've read through several recaps to try and find something even remotely interesting except they'll be first out of the gate with streaming movies for PS3 owners which they say goes live tonight. And . that was about it of any consequence.
The rest was gobbledygook to me. More announcements about accessories and sequels to already popular games but very few "new" game announcements.
Yes, I'm (really) looking forward to LEGO Batman (here's a new video clip), but I really didn't see much else to get excited about from any of the Big 3 going into the holiday shopping season.
Most of the games they talked about, we've already known are coming anyway.
If there isn't going to be new "news" coming out of E3, what's the point? It used to be the time to shine, now it seems it's a time to reheat the sizzle so no one notices the lack of steak.

1Yeah and I considered going, even though I could care less about gaming. Glad I didn’t waste my time, because I have none.
