I am not a big fan of Speech recognition, I find it to be a pain in the butt and usually gets in the way of making a phone call.  However, there are plenty of folks who feel exactly the opposite of me, and some of them have the iPhone.  As of now there is no Voice recognition available on the iPhone, it did not come with the new 3G model, and there aren't any Apple sanctioned third party apps queued up in the App Store.  However, AT&T is looking to change that.

AT&T is at this very moment writing an app that will bring the functionality to the iPhone.  But not just an app to download and stick on your iPhone.  No, AT&T is in the process of developing a web based disaster.  The function in question will be what they deem, a Speech Mashup.  A we based platform that sends your voice commands to a remote server, which will then translate your command and control your handset, taking advantage of the iPhones Web Based browser.

"The primary driver for applications like this is reducing complexity for users," said Chuck Kalmanek, VP of Networking and Service at AT&T Labs, in an e-mail interview. "As devices simultaneously become smaller and more capable, the challenge of inputting larger volumes of information becomes more complex. Speech recognition holds a lot of potential in enabling users to more easily tap into advanced applications on wireless devices."

Uh, okay?  Speech Recognition software is a pain in the butt as a native or third party software, imagine trying to use it over the AT&T network.  And none of this 3G stuff, the markets of actual 3G connection is extremely tiny in the U.S.  No, you're going to get Edge speed voice commands, which means you'll be able to drive to whoever you're trying to call before that web-based command hooks you up.
