The Zune has sold over 2 million units since it was introduced.  The iPod flies out the door at 3.5 million per month.  Apple has made a lot of money in the last two years.  Microsoft has more money than the government.  So how do you beat a company with a device that's kicking your butt every which way AND Sunday?  You buy them with all that money you have.

Microsoft's new idea to get people to buy a Zune is to offer them exclusive content that you can only get on a Zune.  The Redmond company is now going door to door with Agents and the like trying to strike deals that will corner the Entertainment industry onto the Zune.

"What we would be looking to do with any form of original content is the added component that Zune could provide that iTunes or any competing service couldn't."

So that new and improved "90210" could end up on the Zune with exclusive episodes, or maybe a Britney Spears song has an exclusive debut and run on the MS device.

The only way they could pull this off is with gobs of cash, and Microsoft has gobs of cash.  Will it work?  I doubt it.  Sure, Hollywood will take the money, they'll take any bucket of cash offered to them.  But I don't think Joe and Jane Q Public gives a rats a$$, meaning Microsoft is about to spend another boatload on something else that's not really worth it in the long run, instead of making a operating system that's rock solid and the envy of all else.

Is Microsoft shooting a dead horse here or what?
