This year is already shaping up as a year in which we could see the greatest shoot out of all time between handset manufactures.  Nevermind the Palm Pre being the possible “One,” the device sent, indeed prophesied by the ancient scripture dated back as far as 2007, that says there will be one who will come and kill off the reign of the iPhone. ÂÂ
Maybe this is why HTC was quietly laughing all by themselves in the dark back row at the Palm CES announcement.  HTC says nevermind the iPhone, we’ve got a “Pre” killer so there won’t even be a chance for Palm’s new hotness to take aim at the iPhone.
This is interesting because we all know that HTC can make some very nice devices.  The problem is they always have Windows Mobile on them.  The G1 is okay, but frankly, when compared to the HTC Touch line-up, it’s not the handsome one in the family.  But now that we know HTC is going to be paying a lot less attention to WM throughout 2009, there could be some serious Android hotness coming our way.  And that is what one HTC exec is saying while taking aim squarely at the Pre, saying that they have a Android device that is ”better and more functional.”  Really, all they need to do is put Android on the HTC Touch Pro or HD, lower the price and game over.
But this is looking like it will be a fantastic handset year.  New HTC Android devices with HTC tweaks, what more can you ask for?  Don’t answer that.
