skytheme

One of the things that has exploded onto the scene for Blackberry owners is Themes. Now the once stodgy Blackberry UI can be turned into a ultra smart get business done device, that also let’s users have fun.

And what can be more fun than themes? The last few OS updates for the BB OS have come a long way towards giving developers the freedom to create some very interesting themes that go far beyond the native BB screen.

The newest entries into the BB themes world are Dreamthemes, animated themes from a company that has gone one step beyond the rest of the Blackberry themes you’ll find.

Dreamthemes are beautifully crafted animated themes that come with their very own icons specific to each theme, as well as Ringtones that are specific to each theme.

For my review I selected the “sky’s” theme. This theme comes with three different screens.

Each theme comes with 4 screens, one of which is animated, in the case of Sky the animated one is the middle picture above.  As you can imagine, the owner is flying through the clouds on their Blackberry.

You should know that DreamThemes are pretty big files so anyone looking to add them to their Blackberry should make sure there is enough space.  The themes load just like any other theme you’ve downloaded onto your BB, so there is nothing new to expect.

I will say that the initial start-up of the theme takes awhile on my Sprint Blackberry Curve, which is a bit annoying when you need to reset for whatever reason.  But once started, the theme gives you a whole new look with beautifully crafted icons that are large, easy to read and easy to scroll through.  The options allows the user to assign apps of their choosing to the home screen, as well as the one of the three backgrounds to the actual themes.  The application screen icons do not change with the theme however, so when you are in the app screen, your app icons will be default.

Another very nice touch is the selection of four Ringtones that come with your theme.  Both the theme (not the home screen) and the Ringtones come as separate downloads.  The user can either download and assign them all, or just the ones that are more suitable.   I very much thought the inclusion of ringtones was a nice touch and made the Software that much more desirable.

Right now there are 6 themes available, with 4 unique schemes and ringtones, all just as vibrant as the next.

From DreamTheme:

A DreamTheme LiveScreen is effectively an upgrade for your BlackBerry homescreen. In actual fact, it’s just a BlackBerry Java application that you use just like your homescreen. You use your LiveScreen as your ‘launchpad’ for other applications. You can hide and unhide, change the position of, and even add and remove icons from the homescreen. In addition, you can customize the device with ringtones, and a BlackBerry theme that matches the LiveScreen.(Note that in order to launch seldom-used applications, you revert to your normal BlackBerry homescreen).

A BlackBerry theme replaces the background of your homescreen, changes some of the icons, and modifies some of the application buttons and colours. A LiveScreen is an entirely new homescreen for your device. To create the best experience, we recommended to use your LiveScreen as your main homescreen, but also install the accompanying BlackBerry theme so that the application screens take on the colour scheme of the LiveScreen.

I recommend DreamThemes highly, very enjoyable and a huge departure from themes that you’re used.

Each theme cost $9.99 and they are all supported by the developer. Grab the theme of your choice here.
