5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 3-6, 16-14, that’s how it went down today at Wimbledon with Roger Federer reclaiming his #1 seed, claiming his 6th Wimbledon championship, claiming the record for most won grand slams away from Pete Sampras and beating Andy Roddick once again.
Federer tied Sampras who was courtside today, when he won the French Open last month, making it 14 Grand Slams apiece. With Sampras on hand to watch, Roger fought a long hard battle with Roddick, serving up 50 Aces and an incredible 5th set match that went 16-14. And oh, that set is also a Wimbledon record, 30 sets broke the previous record which was 24.
As much as I like and respect Roger Federer and his game. As much as I truly believe he is the best ‘overall’ tennis player I’ve ever seen, I still think he owes a pretty good amount of these last two victories to the ousting of Raphael Nadal at the French Open, and the Nadal knee injury that kept him out of Wimbledon. With Nadal in both, the outcome ‘may’ have been different, or at the very least, much, much harder.
That said, congratulations Roger, you earned it and deserve it!
Oh, and something I neglected to post yesterday. Serena Williams ousted her sister Venus yet again and took home her 3rd Wimbledon championship.
