Avatar showed it’s strength at the box office for a second straight week by taking in another $75M.  The latest in a string of James Cameron blockbusters has now made $212M domestically and $617.3M worldwide on its way to a fast Billion.

Robert Downey Jr., knew he had a tough hill to climb coming into this weeks opening of his newest “Sherlock Holmes.”   With Avatar in front, Holmes still managed to bank a respectable $65.4M debuting bankroll.   Somehow Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel managed to come in and take the 3rd place slot, and collect $50M.

Adult romantic comedy, It’s Complicated, put Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin in the top 5, coming in at #4 with $22M, while George Clooney’s critically acclaimed Up in the Air pulled in $11M holding at #5.

Overall the Christmas weekend saw a fair amount of worthy openings with something for every film lover.
