One death is being blamed for the death of one person and the sickness of at least 58 others. Salmonella poisoning has been found in some samples of ground turkey. The poison is believed to have killed one person, sent 22 to the hospital, no information on where in the country or what brand caused the death.

Ground turkey lovers are being advised to cook any purchased turkey throughly and at a temperature of at least 165 f.

There is a very scary situation beginning to develop in Europe, specifically in Germany at the moment. A deadly strain of the E.Coli virus has been found in that countries vegetables, namely cucumbers. The vegetable virus has already claimed 15 people, one of which was a Swedish woman whom traveled through the country and ate a cucumber.

More than 1,000 people have fallen ill from the E.Coli bacteria currently invading German vegetables, people from at least 6 different European countries and Russia. Russia has already banned all vegetables coming from Germany and the outbreak is causing tensions between Germany and other European countries.

Any one traveling to Germany should be aware and probably stay away from cucumber salads.

On a brighter note for the German people and the world, the country has decided to close all of its Nuclear plants by the year 2022.

It doesn’t get much better than a strong cup of tasty black coffee. I can and do, drink the stuff all day everyday. Turns out, according to the Harvard School of Public Health, all that coffee I’m drinking helps me reduce my chances of Prostate Cancer. Who knew!?

The benefit is likely linked to other compounds in coffee that act as antioxidants, reduce inflammation and regulate insulin … It backs up previous studies that found coffee consumption was associated with lower risk of a wide range of diseases including Parkinson’s, type 2 diabetes and liver cancer.

A twelve year study involving 48,000 men produced the findings that were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The study is not conclusive however, researchers still feel that more study is needed. The current conclusion came from the study that began in 1986, and involved having participants relay their coffee drinking habits every four years.

Vladimir Putin has officially put the brakes on hunting Polar Bears in Russia, at least for this years Polar Bear hunting season. Putin has been a long time opponent of limiting the amount of Polar Bears killed during hunting season. Polar Bears are now on the large endangered animals list.

“Measures taken by Russia will ensure that the United States will be killing at least 70 polar bears fewer than before, which, according to Russian specialists, will help to sustain and boost the population of this beautiful Arctic animal”

The Russian Prime Minister and the US forged an agreement to only hunt a certain amount of the animals per year instead of an all-out ban. There are indigenous people who depend on hunting the animals. However Putin waived this years quota, so there will be no Bear hunting in Russia this year.

Now, if we can get the melting of the ice caps under wraps, the Polar Bear and human species might be alright.

If you are feeling like suddenly radiation is in everything and is everywhere you go, you might be onto something. Reports are now coming in that on March 25th, radiation was found in milk from two west coast states. Authorities have found low levels of radiation in milk in both Washington and California, and as usual with these reports of late, there is no reason for alarm.

Radioactive Iodine-131, 5,000 times lower than harmful doses is what set off the alarm. I know, you’re asking “if radioactive Iodine-131 is 5,000 times lower than normal harmful radiation, why are we even talking about it?”

To that I say, good question.

Researchers at the National University of Cuyo, in Mendoza, Argentina, have discovered something scary with our love for technology and fashion. Wearing your cellphone on your hip, may cause bone loss.

The researchers did a study and found that men who wore their phones on their hips in a belt clip or the equivalent, showed a marked decrease in (BMD) bone mineral density loss over men who did not. The study was done over a twelve month period.

The culprit here is not what you may think, those radioactive long life batteries are not what’s causing the loss, researchers believe the loss is caused by electromagnetic fields emitted by the phones. Which when you think about it, is pretty alarming because electromagnetic fields effects all of us, wether we wear a phone or not. Given enough time we will find out that just about all of our new toys are killing us.

Iron’s main job is to help transport oxygen through hemoglobin in the blood and myoglobin in muscles. A lack of iron in red blood cells leads to a condition known as iron deficiency or anemia.

Cast iron also has some practical advantages over nonstick coated aluminum. It can go from stovetop to oven with ease as well as holding it’s heat better and more evenly. Todays cast iron comes pre-seasoned and is a bargain at around $20 for a skillet. However the best cast iron pan is an old one so you may want to think twice before you turn up your nose to Grandma’s hand me down.

Saké, it’s the new black!  Seriously, saké seems to have come into fashion in the US as of late and rightly so.  Once you dive into the world of saké you see that it is as interesting, complex and varied as wine.

The word saké in Japanese can refer to any alcoholic beverage, but in general, it is used in English to mean a specific type of rice alcohol, also known as nihonshu. Saké is sometimes called rice wine, but in truth, it is not a wine, nor is it exactly a beer, nor a spirit. Saké is a rather unique type of fermented alcohol.  Saké is free from sulfites. It is also light and comparatively free of hangover-causing congeners. Saké pairs well with a wide variety of lighter foods and ranges in flavor from dry to sweet and musky to floral.

Most people in the US mistakenly think that saké is meant to be enjoyed warm.  They only reasons to warm a saké are if you’re cold or to cover up the taste of a bad saké.  Good saké is meant to be chilled.  How do you know a good saké from a bad one?  Since there are many controls in the making of saké, generally speaking you can usually be confident that the more expensive one will also be the better tasting.  You’ll also want to see Junmai, Honjozo, Ginjo or Daiginjo on the label. The cheap (under$10) brands you find at your grocery chains are not your best bet.  A quality saké will usually set you back at least $17 to as much as $150.

If your looking for fireworks in your backyard as well as your bedroom this Fourth of July, then look no further than the luscious red fruit of the the watermelon.  According to a study, the phyto-nutrients found in watermelon include lycopene, beta carotene and the “lovely” citrulline, proven to have a calming, Viagra-esque effect to blood vessels. The citrulline is found in the rind, so be careful.   On another note, for the best tasting watermelon, place the room temperature watermelon in the fridge for 30 minutes before slicing. This quick chill causes the melon’s cells to constrict, so the sweet juice stays in the slices instead of running out onto the cutting board. Happy Fourth!

To keep raspberries fresh for a week, wash them in a bowl of water and white vinegar (3 parts water to 1 part vinegar) to eliminate mold-casuing bacteria.  Rinse under running water and drain in a colander, then place the berries in a paper towel-lined salad spinner and spin until completely dry.  Enjoy!

Want to extend the life of those expensive blades in your razor.  Then do yourself a favor and don’t leave the razor in the shower.  Instead, after each use, hit it with a blast of heat from the blow dryer and store outside the shower.  Moisture in the shower leads to rust, the cause of razor dullness.  Keeping the blade dry will ensure it lasts for at least 15 shaves.

I love this time of the year.  The fields around my home are full of fresh corn on the cob, just begging to be picked and devoured.  Want to make sure the corn you’ll be enjoying is sweet and tender every time.  Just add a pinch of sugar and a splash of milk to the cooking water.  The lactose in milk helps tenderize the kernels, while sugar enhanced the corn’s natural sugars.  So save the salt for the table, as it will toughen the kernels.

How many time have we told our children to re-tie their shoes.  Well, to prevent this from happening time after time  here’s what you need to do.  Coat the end of the laces with baby powder before they tie their shoes.  Talc, a mineral in the powder, absorbs any grease that can make laces slippery.   And the slight friction it provides helps little hands grip laces and knots stay in place.

Yuck!  Ever unknowingly step in a piece of gum and then it get’s stuck to the carpet in your car.  Well not to fear, duct tape is here.   Take a piece of the tape and press it onto the gooey mess, then peel back the tape and discard.  Repeat with a fresh piece until the gum is gone.  What would we do without duct tape.

You know it’s going to be a bad day when: Your ready to check out, you pull your credit/debit card from your wallet, your ready to swipe the card and then no workee.  Next, you get that funny look from the cashier, like you know she’s saying ”I bet there’s no money in your account”.  But you know it is just the worn out magnetic strip, due to major over swiping.  So you try again and still no go.  Well, here’s the fix. Wrap the card in a plastic shopping bag from your friendly cashier.  Wrap it around the card tightly, then swipe.  The thin layer of plastic fools the machine into thinking there are no defects on the strip.  No plastic bag handy, or you don’t have one stashed in our purse, then use a paper receipt.  Continue swiping!

Well, the sad news is, that sugar is addictive. Studies reveal that bingeing today on sweets can make them harder to resist tomorrow. Sugar floods your brain with dopamine, a hormone that makes you happier and more relaxed, much like an opiate drug (describes any of the narcotic alkaloids found in the opium poppy)! But when the sugar is gone, your brain demands more, causing intense cravings that can last up to two weeks. New data from the University of Michigan shows that you’ll likely eat 6 percent less if you replace 60 minutes of awake time (when you may snack) with an hour of shut-eye. And a Harvard study that tracked around 68,000 women found that those who clocked only five or fewer hours of rest a night had a 32 percent greater chance of gaining more than 30 pounds over a 16-year period than thoses who got seven hours of sleep.
