May this Christmas bring you all the gadgets you could ever dream of, all the entertainment you could ever want, and that much closer to WORLD PEACE and UNDERSTANDING!

Many of you have noticed that things have been bare around here, and in the last two days we’ve been up, then down, then back up again. I want to pass on a little explanation as to what happened as of Wednesday the 3rd of February. On that day I got the worst news I’ve received in my entire life. My younger brother committed suicide, and my world crashed. Smartphones, new tech, funny videos, stupid politicians, scantily clad women and all other topics carried here at MP became instantly, unimportant. Not that you, my readers and subscribers aren’t extremely important to me, but the ideal of and the ability to update with new post on the banality of the day was simply out of my reach.

My girlfriend and I flew to Des Moines where we along with my mother and other family – walked through the worst days of my time on this planet. Then to add insult to injury, I received an email from my hosting account informing me that MP had been shut down on Monday of this week. They claimed that MP was over utilizing resources, which was strange seeing as how I was not posting anything. But I neither had the ability or strength to do anything about it, even after I got them to turn it back on that afternoon.

The saga continued with more horrifying news:

As we flew back home on Tuesday, vinegar was poured onto the wound. Our flight out of Des Moines connecting us to our Los Angeles flight out of Denver, had to crash land. I’ll spare you (and myself reliving it) all the details of that experience, but suffice it to say, it was horrible. I hope that no one reading this ever has to go through a landing where the Captain and flight attendants are screaming for you to “Brace for Impact”. Now for the salt on top of the vinegar poured onto the open wound.

After finally landing safely in L.A., and making it back home alive and in one piece (although completely discombobulated), I ventured to ascertain exactly what happened with the site, and how to fix it before it was shut off again. That is when I discovered that MP had been hacked. Yep, somehow, some ass got into the back end and applied a malicious spyware code, which in turn overused the resources resulting in MP being shut down. So, early Wednesday morning, I began the arduous task of cleaning it up. That of course resulted in the site going offline several times throughout the day. It also meant that prior to the 4th, all comments, and the kind comments left by readers who read the post explaining why I wouldn’t be posting for a few days, are lost. My apologies. Also, no reader was infected.

With the help of my host, we were able to get it all cleaned, backed up, back up and operational…..I hope. And with that, MP well be back to ‘Smartphones, new tech, funny videos, stupid politicians, scantily clad women and all other topics,’ but forgive me if a few days seem a little slim on the new article side, sleeping and focus is still a bit rough for me at the moment. But this too shall pass.

On another note: Please, please, for the sake of yourself and the ones that you love and care for. If you are feeling like life is too hard to go on, seek help. Ask for it, talk to someone, anyone. Taking your own life will not only end any chance for you to see the better day THAT WILL COME, but it will also inflict unimaginable pain on those who love you. Wether you know or believe it, there is always someone out there who loves you, and If not at the moment, there is someone out there waiting to love you. Don’t rob them or yourself.

Okay, let me start out by saying Text Free Unlimited isn’t actually free, the app itself cost. There is a free version (text free: lite), but I have to say, after trying them both, the paid version is by far the better and worthy choice. If you don’t mind ads, and the occasional bump in the road, go for the free (lite) version. If you want to avoid AT&T’s highway robbery texting cost, or text with confidence on your iPod Touch, then get the paid version of this great app. For $5.99 (renewable yearly), Text Free Unlimited offers sms texting that actually gets to the person you are texting. Better and more importantly, your iPhone or iPod Touch will alert you when you receive a text, a claim that many free App Store sms apps promise, but few if any deliver.

You may have noticed that I used the word (probably) in the title. I say probably because I happen to think that GV dialer and Google Voice Mobile are the best, but you must have a Google Voice subscription to take advantage of them, and GV Dialer was crushed by Apple. Text Free Unlimited is in my findings the next best thing when it comes to sending and receiving text for free on your (i) device. You will have to set up a text free account that gives you an email address. This address is then used as your account, allowing you to send and receive as though it is email.

I have been using the app for about a month now and have been very happy with it. The addition of push alerts since 3.0 came on the scene, puts Text Free over the rest. The app, even though you have an email address, acts just like your normal sms application. Same restrictions apply, but without the cost, which for iPod Touch users, is heaven sent, and for iPhone users, deserves a mention in your nightly prayers.

We can’t thank you enough for pointing this out, though it’s very inconvenient (for both of us), that you (a reviewer) had to be the one to find this issue. We’ll be releasing a new version ASAP”

Google Latitude

Well it finally happened. Normally the iPhone and iPod Touch are the first to get any Google hotness, even over Googles own Android. But not so with Google Latitude. Blackberry and Windows Mobile were the first to get it. Now the iPhone and iPod Touch get the chance to tell the world everywhere their owners are. However, instead of it coming as an App Store download, Google Latitude comes as a Safari web page.

Our Latitude web app provides all the core functionality you might expect: you can see the location of your friends on a map and modify your privacy settings so that you control how your location is shared and with whom. In fact, if my friends and colleagues back in London haven’t yet noticed my absence, they’ll see in Latitude that I’m currently vacationing on the beach in Australia. Hi guys, remember me!?

You’ll also find basic Search and Directions functionality to help you get around the world. And just like our Google Maps for mobile client apps (and more recently on desktop Google Maps), you can press the “blue dot” to be taken to your approximate current location on the map with My Location, thanks to Safari now supporting the W3C Geolocation API.

To try Google Latitude, type google.com/latitude into your iPhone’s browser. And if you miss the experience of launching the app directly from your home screen, you can add a bookmark to the home screen by opening Latitude in Safari and tapping the + icon > Add to Home Screen > Add.

Mac OS Crystal by KD Storm Conversion

True Mac fans will have to be careful when viewing this theme for the Blackberry Storm because if you don’t already have one, you just might run out and buy one just to use this theme. This may be the best Mac Styled theme I’ve seen to date. Their have been some great ones that have blown me away but “Crystal” is hands down the winner at the moment.

The “Finder toolbar” at the top is an excellent touch, one that sets Crystal above the others. Users can change backgrounds and hide the bottom dock to expose all that Storm real estate. This is an excellent, excellently executed MacOS styled theme.

Here’s another beautiful theme for you. This one is called iTouch and I really like the look and feel of this one. I’m a sucker for strong blue themes. I’m also a fan of themes that are wildly different from other themes out there, and iTouch definitely stands on it’s own.

iTouch theme is unique in its style and complexity. There is no such theme available on the current market and you can get it only here and nowhere else.
This theme features approximately three different style combined into one single theme.
Homescreen features text based icons, which when scrolled over show a huge icon to the right. Text based icons are static and cannot be changed.

GV Mobile For iPhone/iPod Touch

For those that were lucky enough to jump on to Google Voice after Google purchased it from Grand Central and sent out open invites, they already know how great a web app it is. For those who didn’t jump on board then, before it was closed to the public, their chance to learn how great it is right around the corner.

Last week Google began sending out invites to join the service, so millions more will get in on the action.

If you don’t know what Google Voice is, let me give you a brief introduction. What started out as a simple Visual Voicemail app that allows users to recieve a written transcript of voicemail messages on the web, or delivered to a handset, is now much, much more.

Google added the ability to choose a phone number and have any calls to that number forwarded to your handset. Users could then screen any calls along with recieving a written transcript of the message. There is also a online inbox where users can take care of all calling business.

Google Voice also allows the user to send and recieve SMS text messages for free. Those messages can too be forwarded to the users handset.

Users can also make calls using their Google number so the recieving end never need know your actual carrier phone number. There is also a rumor working that Google will soon be allowing the porting of your actual carrier number.

Now that GV is opening to the public, it only stands to reason that Google will offer their very own mobile app to use with the hottest selling handsets, but there is no telling when that app will come, and in it’s infant beta stage, how useful it will be. Google has proven that they need a few iterations of a mobile app before they get it just right.

In the absence of an official app, iPhone and iPod Touch owners can take advantage of an fantastic app called GV Mobile from Sean Kovacs.

I have been using GV Mobile for over a week now and I have to say, Google will have to really show up with something extraordinary to get users to replace it. GV Mobile provides quick and easy access to all of the features that are available online.

Users can dial right from the app (iPhone) and GV Mobile will connect to your account and make the call. Users can also on both the iPhone and iPod Touch see and listen to any message left on the accounts voicemail. Listen, save or delete from your (I) device.

My favorite feature is SMS text. Users can use the text feature just as they would from their desktop, send and recieve text messages through GV Mobile and save a ton of dough.

There is one drawback that I hope Sean fixes soon. There are no notifications, so If you recieve a reply to your text, or someone simply sends a text, you won’t know until you open the app. Include notification now that 3.0 allows for it, and GV Mobile becomes the perfect app and hard to beat even by Google themselves.

If you are a Google Voice user or plan to be soon, do yourself a favor and grab GV Mobile, it’s the perfect companion for the perfect Voicemail app.

GV Mobile allows users of Google Voice to:

dial numbers (domestic for free and international at a variable rate) via the iPhone’s address book or typing in on the keypad
send SMS messages
retrieve and delete recent call history
playback and delete voicemails
take calls from different phones other than your iPhone
add, delete, enable, or disable the phones that Google Voice forwards calls to
GrandDialer users, this is your replacement app!

You must already have a Google Voice account in order for this application to work. Grand Central users that have converted their account to Google Voice will also be able to use this.

How does GV Mobile work?
GV Mobile initiates a secure connection with Google Voice and sends a command to do various tasks(call, send sms, etc). GV Mobile communicates only with Google Voice, no one else.

Please note that GV Mobile relies heavily on the use of an internet connection (3G, EDGE, Wifi, etc).
If your internet connection is shady a best, this app may not function properly. A future update will include ‘Offline Mode’ which will allow for dialing using your Google Voice number without the need of an internet connection.
By using GV Mobile, you understand that I am not liable for data charges you may incur.

At the time of release of GV Mobile (~4/3/2009), Google Voice (the service) is still in preview/beta mode. Any drastic changes on their end may make GV Mobile inoperable. With that said, I plan on fully supporting this app to ensure it functions if changes occur.

It’s hard to beat Netflix when it comes to movie rentals. The company provides a easy inexpensive way to kick back with the family and watch whatever you want by stripping away the need to return it the next day. For $4.99 a month and a postage stamp, you just can’t beat it. If you have been wondering what Google has been up to, wonder no more. They’ve been working on a way to make the mobile version of their landmark email service stronger, faster, smarter. Like the six million dollar man.

Not quite, but it will auto-complete for you as you begin to type in a name or address.

At Google we’re always looking for a way to do things faster. Today, we’re announcing two improvements that will speed up your Gmail for mobile experience.

The first improvement is faster address auto-completion. This means that as you begin typing the first few letters of your friend or colleague’s name or email address, Gmail for mobile will quickly display possible contacts. We sped up this process by reusing previously fetched matches in subsequent searches.

The second improvement is that we’ve enabled keyboard shortcuts for Android-powered devices with a physical keyboard. Now you can use all those familiar Gmail keyboard shortcuts to quickly move through your inbox. For example, if you’re reading an email you can press ‘u’ to return to the inbox or ‘n’ to move to the next conversation.

To try out Gmail for mobile, visit gmail.com in your mobile browser. The new and improved iGoogle is faster and easier to use with the new inclusion of in-line displays. This is is very good improvement over the last one which was difficult to use.

You may be wondering why everytime you log on to MorninPaper there’s a new header. Maybe you are, maybe you don’t even notice it. But for those who have noticed, I thought I should give a short explaination.

You may or may not already know that this site started on the blogging community “typepad” and was called “Morningpaper.”   As the site quickly gained popularity, I too quickly began to realize that, that format could not offer me what I wanted for where I wanted to take the site, so I moved it to WordPress.

Now, outside of the comforting arms of a blogging community where most of the backend is handled for you, and your URL has “.Typepad.com” attached to it,  I had to deal with two issues quickly, learn code and deal with the fact that someone had parked the domain “Morningpaper”.   So in an attempt to not confuse readers too much, I settled on dropping the “G” from morning and making it the way most of us pronounce it anyway, “mornin”.

Then came the hard part, building and maintaining, neither of which were easy. Finding a site template to work has been very difficult, but through trial and error, I have finally found and built one that not only works, but one that I like as well. All of this means that I have had to take a crash course in WordPress code while posting stories everyday, believe me, not an easy task.

In the meantime, I have also been trying to come up with the right logo and design to look and express what morninpaper is all about, Creative, Technical and Informative.  This too has taken me through quite a bit of trial and error.   But I am very happy to report that I have finally, at long last, settled on a logo, name design and font to represent Morninpaper.

I would like to thank you for your patience through this entire ordeal and I hope you like as much as we here like it, because it’s final.

Normally I don’t do too much talking on the merits of blogging platforms, other than to point out how much happier I am to be on WordPress as oppose to Typepad.  So this post is really more pointed to those that are blogging, thinking about blogging or not sure if they want to upgrade to the new 2.7 system on WordPress.  I will keep this short and sweet as to not bore anyone with tedious details because I know as a reader, all I want to know is: “is it worth it?”

ANSWER:  HELL YES!

The new WordPress 2.7 is a light year jump from the administrating offering of any past WordPress.  And unless my computer sped up overnight, it’s much, much faster.  There is one detail that makes this upgrade worth it’s weight in gold.  

Prior to the upgrade, you needed a few plugins to make the administrative panel useful, functions at the ready and features not native, added so you could get things done.  This of course added to load time and could increase bandwidth usage.  I am happy to announce that none of those plugins are necessary any longer, at least for me.   The biggest improvement is the “Post page.”   It used to drive me crazy that the “Tags” and “Categories” boxes were below the post box, forcing me to scroll to add and check off items.  It was always a step that added to write time and slowed me down. But the new version takes care of that by putting both boxes neatly on the right side of the post box, meaning I no longer have to scroll down, keeping me in the flow of my post.

The UI is another huge improvement.  I used to use “Admin Leopard” which gave the admin side a MacOSX look and feel, and I found it to be much more intuitive as far as productivity.   2.7 takes away the need for that plugin as well.  Now, everything is on the left side panel in clear view with drop down access to everywhere you need to go while on the admin side.  This takes two to three steps out of every move.  Now when you what to get to your “widgets” click on “Appearance” a drop list appears and there is the “widget tab” click it and there you go.  This was a two step two link process that no longer requires you to go from page to page to get to the page you want.  This is the case with everything in 2.7.

The Dashboard is another gigantic leap forward.  With the 2.7 update, users can now drag and drop the items wanted in the dashboard.  Place them anywhere in any order, you can also choose what you want and don’t want.  If you don’t want the “WordPress Plugins RSS” uncheck it in the settings and it’s gone.  There is no longer the need for another plugin to do this for you.  

If you are a WordPress user and you’re not sure you want to upgrade, I advice you do so immediately.  The last two days have been a joy traveling through the new interface.  Upgrading was quick and easy, and no plugins were broken.  This is one that they got right, right out of the gate.

Here’s a rather interesting one, I say that because the scammer is using a Hotmail address, and Yahoo.  The header included lower cased “sn” on the MSN portion of Yahoo/Msn.  The there is the fact that I am not a subscriber of anything Microsoft or Yahoo, then the fact the two don’t and wouldn’t be working together to give away random £500,000 prizes.  Actually the list is pretty long, but I fear that there is someone out there who will be curious just enough to give it a go, so I’m posting this one.

It’s been a long and difficult journey but I’ve finally gotten to the point where I actually understand the Pokemon Trading Card game. Yeah, I know, duh!

But first, I have to share why this took so long.

I posted on MorninPaper here and here about my difficulty in grasping the concept. I was on the verge of giving up thinking this must be something incomprehensible to the adult brain. The video game was easy-peasy compared to this. I even visited a local card shop and was sneered out of the building for even asking if they knew how I could learn to play Pokemon (“Magic: The Gathering” rules this establishment).

I watched the Pokemon TCG World Championship for clues but all to no avail. I searched online figuring somebody, somewhere, had to have posted better instructions on how to play the card version of Pokemon.

I know what you’re thinking, type in Pokemon.com right? Should get you to where you want to go. Wrong! There’s actually two Pokemon sites, one more “secret” than the other.

Pokemon.com is the general site, here you’ll find all the products, announcements and what not. Great place to start to feed a Pokeholic’s addiction but not so great on how to learn how to play.  But lookey. Along the top tabs there’s something called TCG (Trading Card Game). Click on that to learn to play? Nope. You’re taken to another information only page for cards in the series.

It takes an incredible THIRD mouse click on the window that says “More Info” to then be redirected to Go-Pokemon.com . I thought it was for more information about the current series of cards, not to the site where you could actually watch a video demo.

After recovering from my shock, I found they actually had a pretty good tutorial on how to start playing the game. After watching it a few times, I finally “got” it. I was making it a whole lot harder than it had to be by trying to follow the written directions (again DON’T, watch the video instead).

There’s even a pretty extensive parental guide and other important things about playing in things like leagues and tournaments in your area. I no longer feel like such a dunderhead and have found playing the card game to be a welcome extension of playing the video game. The card game is much more cerebral where deeper levels of strategy and understanding come into play. Reading, math, memorization call for greater degrees of concentration than in the video game.

I’m even starting to catch up in the names, attributes, strengths and weaknesses of various Pokemon with my son that I thought I would never accomplish.

There’s a great deal on YouTube as well, one series from a parent that was pretty good at going beyond the basics.  I recommend you check it out as well as the official one at Go-Pokemon.com

So, I’m feeling pretty good about myself and hope I’ve helped our readers out there following along with my Pokemon road of discovery. Maybe you already figured all of this out (coulda e-mailed a brotha, ya know?), or maybe you were just as lost as I was. But I’m here to tell you parents, or anyone else whose life has been affected by Pokeholism, there is hope.

We want to take a moment to apologies to our readers.  If you had trouble loading MP yesterday, don’t worry it wasn’t you (you knew that already) our server experienced high traffic for a few hours and couldn’t handle the load.  But fear not, we are working on more space and all those things that supposively lead to faster load times.

I am amazed at how many people don’t know this yet, but…..Wait, the truth is, I found out by accident, so for those who have yet to discover it, here’s a way to save some cash and not get a ticket for driving while talking on the phone.

First let me point out that you will need to own a car that still has a tape deck in it.  Auto makers are beginning to phase them out so a lot of newer models don’t have the tape deck.  There are CD adapters for the iPod but they’re not cheap and you’ll need one with a stereo jack.

Now, one day will driving and listening to my tunes thru my then Palm Treo 700p with mOcean, I discovered something I should have known without really thinking about it because it makes so much sense.  I have a cassette tape adaptor for my iPod.  With the adapter for the Treo which allows the use of the treo’s smaller speaker jack, I would plug my treo in and leave the iPod in the house as not to carry around two devices.  

On this particular day, about the second day into leaving the iPod at home, the phone rang.  Now, it rang during the drum break in the middle of “No Quarter” off “Song Remains The Same” (Led Zeppelin), so I wasn’t sure if it was ringing or if it was high end ringing from the symbols since I was cranking it.  Turns out it was the phone.  By the time I figured it out, it was already on the third ring, so when I grabbed the Treo I just hit the answer button, and before I could pull the jack from the Treo, the person on the other line started speaking, thru my six stereo speaker system.

The music cut off and I said “Can you hear me?”  The person answered back “Yeah, what the f*&K are you doing?”  That was the day I realized that I had a hands free speaker phone, loud clear and hassle free.

So far it has worked with every phone.  With the Blackberry 8830, I can even hear any alert on my phone from my car speaker system.  And it only cost $8.95. 

So if you have a tape deck in your car, and a phone that plays MP3′s, you can also have a hands free system, music player, and phone all in one.  

 

I have three Gas station around my immediate neighborhood, all three are now at $4.50…. FOUR DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS, and that’s the cheap stuff regular unleaded.

 

I’m going to let this one play out a bit longer before I shoot my mouth out about it.  But at this moment I am becoming enraged by listening to Bush boot licker after boot licker say that Scott McClellan’s book is mean spirited.  4,000 TROOPS ARE DEAD YOU ASSHOLES.  Sorry for the language, but I hardly think Bush’s feelings come anywhere near the feelings of families who have suspected all along that their loved ones have died for nothing.

 Then there are the thousands of men and women who have been physically and mentally damaged for a war and a cause America had no business waging.  And now that someone from inside the Kings courtship has the balls to speak up, he’s a traitor and “How can he do this to a sitting President?”  How could a sitting President do this to the American Military?  How can a sitting President do this to innocent Iraqi citizens?  How Can a sitting President do this to the American economy, the world economy?

But I’m supposed to listen to Bush shrills repeat over and over that McCLellan is the bad guy here.  There have been countless Bushies that walked out and tried to tell America Bush and Cheney were lying.  Collin Powell, although not walking with a set the size of Scott’s, in his own way tried to tell America that this attack on Irag was a bunch of bull.  The proof is in the pudding when it comes to this war, and in my view, every Bush boot licker that tries to make me feel empathy for Bush because his former employee blew the whistle, has the same American and Iraqi blood on their hands as the crew who round tabled and started this lie.

 

A number of readers have left comments on post that have not shown up.  Very sorry, I have been trying to solve the problem for days now, and have finally got it together.  Comments now work as they should.  For all those that left a comment and didn’t see the fruit of your labor, my apologies.  I spent some time reading them all though, so thanks!

 

Developers, God Bless em.  I’m not going to rip into any developers product because one, they do something that I can’t do, and two, they provide an invaluable service to fans of any platform.  But as days and weeks go by without anything significant happening in the world of Palm, there’s been a trend that I’ve come to notice.  A trend that is beginning to get out of hand.

Like most platforms, be it laptops or mobile phones, you’re bound to find a thousand listings for one type of software that delivers a needed function.  Take “Backup” for example, there have been over a dozen new titles that have popped up in the last month.  All of them backup your Palms info onto the memory card.  

There are three top tier developers who have been ruling that market for a few years now.  One could throw a tiny stone in any direction and hit a agenda/task title, again, there are three top developers in this arena. I’m not trying to kill the free market and or competition, nope I’m simply wondering why they aren’t spending their time developing apps that stand far above the rest.

Like where’s the next Xiino, the web browser that put Blazer to shame.  Where’s the app that better handles true push without background interference, and delivers your mail in rich full HTML?  how about the app or code that makes Google Apps work on your Palm the way Google intended them to? 

I think what I am getting at is seeing a whole new brand of applications that take up where Palm has left off.  We don’t need another “solitaire” app or MP3 player.  With all that is happening with Palms competition, it seems to me that this would be the perfect time to intro some “NEW” apps that just might end up on Palms newest devices.  

I know it’s looking grim out there for Palm, but I’m asking developers to handle that void and wow us with something completely new.
