In case you have not heard the ticker tape parade going on outside, or the singing telegram person has yet to show up to your door, you may not know that there is a new version of Firefox and it is available today. Okay, you’ve heard that there is a new Firefox 4, how could you not, but maybe you aren’t aware that it is available for stable use after you go download it today. Okay, so you know that too. Well then, what are you waiting for, go get it!

The wait will soon be over. In just a few short days the beginning of a new race to see how many downloads of the brand new version of Firefox will be downloaded in a day will begin. Aside from that noise, Mozilla is promising all who download will enjoy the best Firefox experience ever. After a fairly long building, then beta testing of the new product, Mozilla feels the browser is finally ready for general consumption on March 22nd. So set your calendars, ready your alarms and get that clicking finger in shape, the 22nd is right around the corner.

Some of us need our Firefox where ever and whenever we go. But the earlier “Fennec’ version have left a lot to be desired, so taking it with you hasn’t been all that pleasant. Mozilla hopes to change that with the new ‘Firefox 4 Beta’. First you’ll notice the Fennec label has gone bye-bye, Mozilla wants to hold on to the Firefox brand name on all platforms, smart. After downloading, you’ll notice much improved speeds, fantastic pinch and zoom and the ability to keep your desktop and mobile versions in perfect sync, a feat not fully realized in the earlier beta versions.

But remember, this is still in beta, so quirks and issues are bound to surface. Mozilla says all smartphones running Android 2.0 and up, and Nokia N900 with Maemo can run the new version. Grab it and see for yourself.

The good folks over at Mozilla are beside themselves. They have officially submitted their ‘its not quite Firefox’ Firefox Home to the Apple approval board. Now that Opera Mini has had success on the iPhone, Mozilla is really liking their chances of a fast approval process. That of course remains to be seen, but it’s nice to see a company so giddy!

The end user on the other hand, well… It looks like Firefox, smells like Firefox, but it’s not Firefox so it may very well be a little disappointing.

Firefox Home is a free application that provides access to your Firefox desktop history, bookmarks and open tabs on your iPhone. Firefox Home enables access to the websites you need on the go by picking up where you left off with your desktop browsing. Firefox Home uses your browser data, securely synced from Firefox on your desktop to the cloud, to let you search and browse it quickly and efficiently. You can view the sites you want directly in Firefox Home, open them in Mobile Safari or share them with friends via e-mail. Your Firefox data is private and only you have access to it.

Well it’s not Fennec or mobile Firefox, but it will be ‘Firefoxie’ and it will be available soon. Of course that really depends on the approval police at the AppStore. ‘Firefox Home’ is the name and your bookmarks are the game. The iPhone app will allow users to carry around their Firefox bookmarks along with ‘recent visits’. The app will sync with your desktop client and keep you up-to-date. Pages will load inside the app and will hopefully be fast, at least half as fast as you’re used to on your desktop.

Mozilla says it will be available soon, so knowing Apple as we all do, this could take awhile. In the meantime, read a little and watch a little, this will help to really get your hopes up.

Why is this useful?

1. Left work in a hurry? You can pick up where you left off with access to the list of tabs you just had open on your desktop.
2. Need those directions to that restaurant you were just reading about on your desktop? The confirmation code for your flight? Just start typing in the Awesome Bar and those pages will be right at your fingertips.
3. Does it drive you crazy to have to enter the full URL on your iPhone that you’ve visited several times from your desktop? You won’t need to anymore with this app. Mozilla

Yes it’s true, Fennec is finally here for anyone to use. Actually, you’l need to have Android OS 2.0 and it’s best if you have OpenGL ES 2.0. It’s a debug build and can be a bit quirky, but it is running. Vladimir Vukićević is the man responsible for making it happen for Firefox fans with Android in their hands. Here is his official word:

Over the last few months, we’ve made some great progress on bringing Firefox to Android. Michael Wu, Brad Lassey, Alex Pakhotin and I have been focusing on getting a build ready that’s usable by a broader set of people, and we’re now ready to get that build out there. This build should be considered “pre-alpha”, so there are some warnings and caveats:

We’ve only really tested this on the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One.
It will likely not eat your phone, but bugs might cause your phone to stop responding, requiring a reboot.
Memory usage of this build isn’t great — in many ways it’s a debug build, and we haven’t really done a lot of optimization yet. This could cause some problems with large pages, especially on low memory devices like the Droid.
You’ll see the app exit and relaunch on first start, as well as on add-on installs; this is a quirk of our install process, and we’re working to get rid of it.
You can’t open links from other apps using Fennec; we should have this for the next build.
This build requires Android 2.0 or above, and likely an OpenGL ES 2.0 capable device.
Edit: This build must be installed to internal memory, not to a SD card.

There also aren’t yet any automated nightly developer builds or automated updates to this build; it’s even more of a pre-nightly build (even earlier than pre-alpha). But, it’s usable enough that we wanted to get some feedback on it as we continue to develop.

Wow, look at what we have here, Firefox, not Fennec running on the Android OS. Okay, more like ‘on the Android OS.’ Mastermind behind this lovely vision, Vladimir Vukićević, is working to bring the full Firefox browsing experience to Android, and believes that it is entirely possible.

Developer Vladimir Vukićević:

You’ll note that this is the full Firefox interface, and not the Fennec/Firefox Mobile UI; we’re testing with the full interface because it’s significantly more complex than the mobile UI and stresses Gecko much more. So, if the full UI works, then Fennec should work fine as well.

This may very well end up in the hands of users sometime this year, then again, maybe not. All eyes will be on this developing piece of browsing intrigue throughout the year.

Okay Firefox users, the latest and greatest is now available for your pleasure. Finally out of beta and hopefully bug free, Firefox 3.6 is official, stable and good to go. I have found it to be much faster than 3.5 and it’s increments, which is good because it’s one of the claims made by Mozilla.

20% faster with the Gecko 1.9.2 web-rendering. There is full HTML5 support, and a very noticeable faster load time. I’ve loaded up the update on my PC but not on any of my Mac’s, but will get to that this weekend.

You may notice the blue theme in the screenshot. 3.5′s Personas, make fast and responsive use of changing themes on the Firefox browser. There are over a thousand themes to choose from, but be careful, you can easily lose an entire day filtering through them.

This is just a rumor folks so don’t get your blood pressure to high. But word has been swirling for awhile that Firefox is coming to Playstation 3! I have heard of some people being able to get the browser working on their PS3, but I’ve never seen evidence of it. The call for Firefox has been loud and clear, hell any browser would be great. The Playstation browser makes the Blackberry Browser look like a technological HTML rendering masterpiece.

But this news is still in the land rumor, or it’s province name, “Rumorville, a great place to shop.” If we all hold hands and chant, maybe we can make this happen.

Hey all you brave souls with Windows Mobile devices in your pockets, Fennec, that mobile web browser you’ve been waiting for is finally here. Did I mention that it is still in Alpha mode? No? Yeah, it’s in Alpha mode, which means it is still in testing and Mozilla wants to know what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong, and any other stuff you would like to see in the browser.

You no longer have to have a HTC Touch Pro to run the browser, just a WinMob device running 6 is good enough.

This is second alpha milestone of our mobile version of Firefox, codenamed Fennec, on the Windows Mobile 6 platform. This release is provided for for testing purposes only, intended to:
get wider feedback on our approach to the user experience;
engage Mozilla community teams, including localizers, and testers;
get feedback from Web developers;
encourage add-on developers to port existing add-ons and invent new ones for mobile.

The initial focus of Fennec development was on building a new user experience that reflects Firefox’s design principles, adding touch screen support and other interactions appropriate for mobile phones and other handheld devices. Fennec preserves leading features like the Smart URL Bar (“awesome bar”) and support for add-ons.

This Windows Mobile alpha release continues to focus on stability, performance, and integration with the Windows Mobile OS. This version also includes numerous fixes and and our new shiney theme.

Anyone without the Nokia N800 or N810, (which covers a boatload of folks) can now employ the use of the famed Firefox Fennec. Wait, did I say on the HTC Touch? Yeah, only if you’ve got yourself a HTC Touch Pro. The mobile browser has been available for use on the two Nokia models but not for anyone else. Now Mozilla has let it loose for WinMo users swinging a Touch Pro and with support for Add-ons no less.

Now at Alpha 1, Fennec is still very much a work in progress.

We are pleased to announce that Fennec Alpha 1 for Windows Mobile 6 is available for download by developers and testers. This is an early developer release intended for testing purposes only. We would like to invite interested Windows Mobile developers and users to join with Mozilla’s developer and user community to help develop, test and refine the product. —- This release has been targeted and tested on the HTC Touch Pro. We will be adding support for more devices in future releases. To install on your device, you can either navigate to this cab installer from your phone’s current browser or download it to your desktop and copy it to your device via ActiveSync. It’s been a bit quiet for a little while now but the Browser wars are still going on.  Firefox by Mozilla is still going strong and picking up fans on a daily basis.  Today Mozilla makes those fans a lot more happy with a release of an updated beta, now up to version 3.5.  Among other things the update brings private browsing mode, which is a feature now implemented in IE 8 and the Safari 4 beta.

* Improved tools for controlling your private data, including a Private Browsing Mode.

* Better performance and stability with the new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine.

* The ability to provide Location Aware Browsing using web standards for geolocation.

Just like wiki said, Mobile Firefox, affectionately dubbed “Fennec” is now here and ready for the HTC Touch Pro.  I will give it a go to see how I like the early build, but so far reports say that it is very slow and page loading is like watching paint dry.  If you don’t have a HTC Touch Pro but have a Windows Mobile VGA (480×640) device, you can check it out for yourself.  Just remember that this is not the final release, it’s really to give us an idea as to where Fennec is headed.

Fennec (mobile Firefox) is on it’s way to an HTC Touch Pro near you, and luckily for me I just happen to have one near me.  A post on the developer wiki says: We are targeting a Milestone release for the first week of February, targeting the HTC Touch Pro. 

This is good news for HTC Touch Pro users.  If it just has to be on a WM product, this choice is a good one.  Look out for what may be the first release of a mobile version to everyone’s favorite browser next week.

You want or need a new PC and for some reason you haven’t gone out and purchased yourself a Mac.  You want or need a new PC but you don’t want to deal with Vista nightmares and you can’t wait around for sometime 2010 for Windows 7.  After shopping around you’re probable pretty upset with Microsoft because they took your beloved Windows XP away from you.  Well you’re in luck because Dell has decided to give you a couple choices.

Inspiron 1525 laptop and the 530 desktop will ship with XP loaded on brand new systems given you a bit of piece of mind before you can make that 7 leap….of faith.

One catch though, you have to be willing to plop down another $150 on top of the hardware price.  Yeah, sorry folks.  Dell wants to give you your OS of choice, but they want you to work for it.

A punch to the gut of G1 owners and Android waiting room citizens.  It seems that Java is the babe in the woods for the OS and Firefox mobile, which means there will be no Firefox surfing on any upcoming Android handsets nor the one and only current one.  

Mozilla wants Google to accept programs not written in Java and Google says we own the web that your browser surfs on.  Someone will have to bend but in the meantime Android consumers will suffer the battle.

The release of Firefox 3.1 will come equipped with the now famed “Porn Mode” feature that allows surfers to surf the web and not let wives and husbands know that Firefox was just used to sign up for “Singles.”

Private Browsing let’s you move about the web and not record you activities into your history, cache or cookies.  Put Firefox into Private Mode when you go to answer the email from sluttiesixtynine.  Respond and select non-private browsing mode, now you’re back to recording your movements they you always have.  

This is going to come in handy for millions around the globe.  Looks like Mozilla beat Microsoft to the punch on this one.

They’re starting to creep out little by little.  Mozilla announced that they will have the mobile version available in Alpha a lot sooner than earlier stated.  ”Fennec” as it is so dubbed has been pictured running on a Windows Mobile touchscreen device, giving us early indication to what the new browser will look like. 

I’m sure that it will go through several changes before it is officially released in Alpha before the end of 2008 as promised by Mozilla.  But what remains to bee seen is if the mobile platform will put a dent into Microsoft’s mobile IE, the way the desktop version has.

Like Chrome for Windows before it, Mozilla has announced that there may be a version of Firefox mobile for Windows Mobile in just a short few weeks.
“Work on Windows Mobile has heated up quite a bit. We should be getting some Fennec builds for Windows Mobile soon.”

Looks like Mac and Linux users are getting boned on this one too. Come on guys I get it, hit Microsoft where it hurts, as fast as you can. But you’re really peeving Mac, Blackberry, Palm and Linux users off here.

Is it true?  After all the 2010 talk, is the mobile version of Firefox actually about to hit the airwaves in just a few short weeks?  According to a recent interview yes.  

Mozilla CEO John Lilly:

Question: And what are you doing in mobile? 

Answer: We want to make sure that the Web on mobile is more like the Web than what the mobile industry offers today, which is closed, separate networks and not a very good information-getting experience for the user. The first thing is to bring Firefox to mobile devices. We’re working on that, and we’ll see some alphas in a few weeks. 

The mobile web has recently been a little better than what he’s describing, but yes, it’s far from being what it could be. The main problem is: there’s little way to make money from a mobile website anyways, so there’s no incentive for most companies to do so.

There’s no reason to be suspect, but we’ll have to keep a close eye on these developments.

Zune phone, no Zune phone.  Zune Phone, Zune Windows Mobile.  The Zune Phone, a actual hardware devices was smashed last week once and for all (sure).  But the Zune still lives on, on your WM phone.  

Now there are hints the Zune software will be ported to Windows Mobile as an addition to the already too many barely working features inside the OS.  Fix it first I say.

There is no time frame, but Uncle Fester hinted around the fact that porting the Zune Software to the WM OS is a viability Redmond is exploring.

Oh dang that was fast.  One day release of a beta from Google and Mozilla is all up in it!  The makers of Firefox are all over Chrome with benchmark test that show how Firefox 3.1 is faster than Googles new Chrome entry. 

The yet to be released 3.1 will be much faster so says Mozilla, but those using Chrome at the moment aren’t so sure because limited experience with the browser says, dang, this is fast. 

But it’s V8 vs TraceMonkey, the two engines powering the perspective browsers and Mozilla’s early field test through SunSpider says Chrome is 28% slower on Windows XP and 16% slower on Windows Vista.

Even though the amount of IE users is still greater than users of any other Browser, that number decreases daily as more and more surfer learn just how inadequate it is, and just how much better browsers like Mozilla’s Firefox is.  New Internet proxies are changing the way developers do things on the net, meaning easier, and easier to control a lot more content.  However, Microsoft is still showing it’s arrogance in this area, but that’s about to change.

Mozilla, makers of the excellent Firefox browser are current creating a plugin that will make IE submit to HTML5 Canvas.  Meaning, sites like the one you are currently reading and many more will be shown to you the way the designer intended you to see it.  Microsoft has been bucking this move, asking developers to change their websites to work with IE7 -8 and 6.  We’re unwilling to do this simply due to the existence of Firefox, Safari and Opera, all web Browser that can handle the webs new technologies.  

Developers are confident that users will eventually give any of these new Browsers a try, and discover just how much better they are.  But Mozilla isn’t waiting.

Most browser implementors are quick to adopt emerging Internet technologies, but Microsoft can’t or won’t make Internet Explorer a modern web browser. Despite some positive steps in the right direction, Internet Explorer still lacks many important features. Its mediocrity has arguably hampered the evolution of the web and forced many site designers to depend on suboptimal proprietary solutions. 

IE’s shortcomings won’t hold back the Internet for much longer, however, because Mozilla plans to drag IE into the next generation of open web technologies without Microsoft’s help. One of the first steps towards achieving this goal is a new experimental plugin that adapts Mozilla’s implementation of the HTML5 Canvas element so that it can be used in Internet Explorer. 

The Canvas element allows web developers to programmatically render interactive bitmap images in HTML content. It was invented by Apple to bring richer graphical capabilities to the company’s WebKit renderer. The Canvas functionality eventually became part of the HTML5 standard and has been implemented in both Gecko and Presto. Canvas is used extensively in several popular web applications, including Google Maps, but it hasn’t gained widespread acceptance because it isn’t available in Internet Explorer.

This is truly good news for those who wish to use IE, or those not-so-tech savvy that they shy away from what’s provided with a purchased computer or OS.  Users will be able to use and view the internet the way it’s intended, not the way Microsoft wants you to.

Again, for the second time today, I have to state that this is a positive step toward ending the IE rule.  Mozilla’s download day gave them 8.3 million downloads within 24hrs.  That’s a ton of downloads.

This is the first post of what will no doubt be many analysis posts, so here are a few things that have happened during the first official day of Firefox 3 life:

Mozilla set out to set a record for 24 hour downloads of their new Firefox 3.0.  Ten hours after the gun went off Firefox downloads were over 5 million.  That’s a lot of downloading.

But prior to this event there had been reports of Firefox gaining on Microsoft’s IE.  Not just Firefox, Safari and Opera are also gaining ground on the one time clear leader of the pack.

But rather than take the word of others, I decided to take a look at the “browser statistics” for morninpaper.  As you can see in the graph above, since moving here last month,  folks are viewing with Firefox at close to the same rate as with IE.  MSIE is still in the number one slot, but Firefox is close behind with Safari bringing in the 3rd slot.

So if this is any indication, those statistics seem to have some fact behind them.

 

The IE team personally brought a cake of good will and congrats to the Mozzila Firefox team.  I don’t want to tell this story, you should read from horses mouth, it’ll give you the warm fuzzies. 

Note: IE users, view the internet the way nature intended, download another browser.

 

Be afraid Safari, give it up IE and watch your back Opera because that’s a lot of downloads.  As you can see from the photo I just snapped, the total is now close to 4 million 10 hours after the release.  Mozilla says the counter is actually lagging so the total at this moment could be a lot higher.

It seems to me that Mozilla’s Guiness World Record goal is without doubt in reach.  At 10:00am PDT tomorrow the counter stops, so if you want to help in their bid while gaining a excellent new browser, head on over and download.

 

The much anticipated and very highly reviewed Firefox 3.0 is now ready to go.  Mozilla set the download page to live at 10:00 PDT, from that point on their goal is a world record on day download.

Good news, the world of 3.0 will be official next Tuesday June 17th, for Firefox.  Mozilla is looking to set a one day record for downloads of the new and improved browser. 

“Whenever we’re asked “when is Firefox going to be released” we endeavor to answer to the best of our abilities, but the truth of the matter is that we’ll only ever ship “when it’s ready”. We have a lot of indicators that help us understand when the product is ready for release: feedback from our pre-release milestones, excitement in the community and the press, availability of compatible Add-Ons, and a large active beta community helping us ensure that the release is compatible with all the various sites on the Internet.”

Mobile Browsing is going rock by the end of this year!  This looks pretty good, so good in fact that I really hope they are able to pull it off and not just have a bunch of video’s and screenshots for another year.

Just in case you were not aware, Mozilla has pulled the RC2 off their FTP and put it on the official download page.  Now you can grab it if you use anything other than PC.  

I will be giving it go today.  RC1 did nothing but crash on me, hope this one does the trick.

For all those antsy to get those bugs out and add-on on, time is nearing.  Mozilla has uploaded the Release Candidate 2 onto a FTP server.  There are two files, both of them executables so Mac users don’t even waste your time.  There should be an official link on the Mozilla site with availabilty to all platforms soon
