On April 20th, President Obama will hold a townhall meeting to discuss the budget and the crisis we face. Mark Zuckerberg and his COO Sheryl Sandberg will sit with the President while the entire event is streamed live. Facebook fans tuning in to the event will be able to ask question live on the Facebook page.

Seeing as how the Motorola Xoom is the only real true competitor to the iPad and the iPad 2, any news about the device never goes without notice. A few days ago we found out that the WiFi only version of the Android 3.0 Tablet would be available soon, soon as in, sometime in March. Thankfully for all those who don’t want to go the way of the iPad, or Samsung, Amazon is ready to take your Xoom order.

The price is still the same, $599, but going the Amazon pre-order route will pretty much guarantee your Xoom on your doorstep the day it’s actually released.

Samsung Galaxy Tab will operate on the Sprint 3G network and customers can be confident in their ability to stay connected. According to the results of a 13-city test conducted by PC World on 3G performance, no one has a more reliable network than Sprint. For the second consecutive year, Sprint’s reliability rates were second-to-none.

PC World’s test involved Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in 13 major cities in all regions of the country during December 2009 and January 2010. In all, roughly 9,000 individual tests of Sprint’s 3G service were conducted from 280 testing locations. The web browser that Google made has entered the terrible two’s. Except, it’s not actually terrible and instead of uttering the word “NO” incessantly, Chrome is saying “yes.” Yes to a more streamlined look – if that were possible, a slightly improved color scheme, and a boost in speed, of which Google says makes the little browser that could – 3 times faster than it was yesterday. All this and a lot more comes tied by a birthday gift because the browser turns the mighty two today.

Today, we’re releasing a new stable version of Chrome that is even faster and more streamlined. Chrome is now three times faster than it was two years ago on JavaScript performance. We’ve also been working on simplifying the “chrome” of Chrome. As you can see, we took the already minimalist user interface and stripped it down a bit more to make it easier to use. We combined Chrome’s two menus into one, revisited the location of the buttons, cleaned up the treatment of the URL and the Omnibox, and adjusted the color scheme of the browser to be easier on the eyes.

Sliding back into Doc Brown’s DeLorean and setting the dial ahead by a few months, we have more in store for Chrome. As always, we’re hard at work on making Chrome even faster, and working on ways to improve graphics performance in the browser through hardware acceleration. What would a music experience designed specifically for the modern web look like? This is a question we’ve been playing around with for the last few months. Browsers and web technologies have advanced so rapidly in the last few years that powerful experiences tailored to each unique person in real-time are now a reality.

Today we’re excited to launch a musical experience made specifically for the browser. Called “The Wilderness Downtown”, the project was created by writer/director Chris Milk with the band Arcade Fire and Google. Building this project on the web and for the browser allowed us to craft an experience that is not only personalized, but also deeply personal for each viewer. “The Wilderness Downtown” takes you down memory lane through the streets you grew up in. You win some you lose soon, and when it comes to Google, they mostly win. But when it comes to Wave, Google most likely felt a bit like Microsoft feels, behind the curve ball while trying to reinvent the wheel. What does that proverbial Wheel look like? Facebook, the Social Networking site that just keeps rolling along. Google was hoping to take their innovation and drown Facebook with their sea of participants, all of whom would presumably vacate Facebook for Wave.

But alas it was not to be. The above is a photo of the MP Wave, and I can only imaging that this is how a lot of others looked. Too bad, it was a nice idea, but Google should know, when someone has done it right, it’s best to do something else completely different. Heck they’re the poster child for that valuable lesson to Microsoft on a yearly basis. The difference is, Google knows when to cut their loses, so Wave is going bye-bye.

Google says they learned a lot from the experience and that some of the innovations developed through Wave, will see their way to already popular and functional Google products. That sounds intriguing, I’m looking forward to seeing how Google implements Wave into, oh let’s say GMail.

Well they bought the site ‘Blackpad.com’ and now we’ve got a name. Not only that it looks as though we’ve got a pretty good rumor unfolding that says we will be seeing the Blackberry ‘Blackpad’ RIM’s attempt to shoot the iPad out of the sky, this November.

The Blackpad as we know it today, will have the same screen size as the iPad, WiFi and will connect to Blackberry Devices via Bluetooth much like the infamous “Foleo” from Palm. You may remember the much battered Foleo never saw the fruits of it’s labor because, well…. Just because. It seems that RIM is trying to ensure they have competition on the market before Apple can introduce a second version of the iPad, hence the hurry up approach which could see Blackpads in hands come November.

I’m a bit unsure why RIM thinks they are in a competition league with Apple in this division. Seems to me it would be much smarter for them to offer it in a way that shows it as a completely different style device for BB users who want more from their BB usage. Trying to target the iPad and by proxy any future device from Microsoft, HP and any Android running tablet, is a recipe for doom.

But hey, we’ve got some fun to look forward to, so there’s that.

The hopes and dreams of millions may have just been answered in Barcelona today. The desire to not have a crappy web browser as a part of the Blackberry OS experience, is that much closer to reality. The brand new browser was shown off, and it looks good!

The browser is using the same webkit as mobile Safari, supports HTML5 and Javascript, so on paper, it’s already better than what we are using this very moment. But don’t take my word for it, see for yourself:

Though it is still not yet available for users still on Tiger, Google’s Chrome Beta is really beginning to shape up on the Mac. Now the browsing beta built by Google includes the new extensions afforded to Windows users a few weeks ago. If you’ve had the chance to use them on the PC version, you will definitely want to give them a go on your Mac.

Since we released Chrome for Mac in beta last December, we’ve been busy adding new features. Today, after some incubation in the developer channel, we’re happy to make some of these features more widely available. The new beta release of Chrome for Mac offers extensions, bookmark sync, and more.

Wow, look at what we have here, Firefox, not Fennec running on the Android OS. Okay, more like ‘on the Android OS.’ Mastermind behind this lovely vision, Vladimir Vukićević, is working to bring the full Firefox browsing experience to Android, and believes that it is entirely possible.

You’ll note that this is the full Firefox interface, and not the Fennec/Firefox Mobile UI; we’re testing with the full interface because it’s significantly more complex than the mobile UI and stresses Gecko much more. So, if the full UI works, then Fennec should work fine as well.

This may very well end up in the hands of users sometime this year, then again, maybe not. All eyes will be on this developing piece of browsing intrigue throughout the year.

It seems like a decade since Google introduced their very first browser. Since then Chrome has been blazing through URL’s at lightning speeds, with new version upgrades and builds that have brought the newest browser up to speed with its competitors. But until today, the only way to experience the breakneck speeds was if you were a PC user. Finally and at long last, Google Chrome for Mac has been released in it’s first public beta.

Unfortunately, there are still limitations on Mac users. The Chrome Beta is only for users of 10.5 or later, Intel only. A fact that I think they should state on the release so that 10.4 users don’t get their hopes up.

No more need for third party solutions, unless you prefer it. Now Twitter is going back and building up, bringing features and functions that probably should have been available at launch or shortly afterwards. But hey, better late than never right!? Now with “List” tweeters can easily organize their favorite tweeters into groups. Those groups can then be public or private giving the user and reader more control and options.

The new addition should be available soon, so we’ll keep a close eye on the progress of the Twitter progress.

Some of you have asked what we mean by preview. This just means that Google Wave isn’t quite ready for prime time. Not yet, anyway. Yet, you will still experience the occasional downtime, a crash every now and then, part of the system being a bit sluggish and some of the user interface being, well, quirky.

This is beginning to become the norm. As Twitter grows, so to grows the amount of attacks from people who live for the sole purpose of causing harm. A new scam has been discovered where subscribers receive a tweet asking “is that you?” in various forms of the same questions. If a subscriber clicks on that tweet, they are taken to a fake twitter page that ask the user to re-login. When the subscriber logs in, bamm, got your info.

Not sure what these attackers want with login info (what are they going to do with it?) but it will be very inconvenient if it happens to you. When you click, it spreads and goes to all of your followers and so on. You’re friends will hate you and you’ll have to delete your tweets and maybe account to clean it up.

If you are asked to re-login after following a link sent to you, report the link and do not click on it.

Uh-oh… Somewhere I remember reading about the concern over the dumbing down of our nation. In a time where a recent study found that 70% of one high school student body could not name the first President, two authors are now compiling a list of great literature to be twiddled down to 140 characters. Twitter is one of the great technological advances of our time, but maybe, just maybe it’s genius can be taken too far.

I can’t say that I have formulated a complete opinion as to how I feel about this. However, storytelling, when it is genius- is a gift that keeps on giving. It moves generation after generation and shouldn’t be trifled with. I guess that’s my knee jerk opinion. But maybe it’s just harmless twitter fun.

You may remember back in May when we discussed Googles new approach to taking over the Internet. Wave was introduced and Google wanted your help in developing it. The Wave team still wants your help, but they are much further along. When you run a site that talks about everything under the sun like we do here, Google translate really comes in handy. However, the one problem I consistently have is remembering where I put the translate bookmark when I need to use it. Now Google has gone one step further in helping users like me translate pages quicker.

The net champ has introduced “Advanced Translate” for IE (which actually doesn’t help me) and IE users. Now a tool in the IE toolbar brings IE users one click away from a translation of a page. But even better, installing the Advanced feature means that if a page opens in the browser, and it is not in your default language, Translate will automatically translate the page for you. Now that’s sweet!

Okay Google, let’s go, we want to see this for every browser, not just the one belonging to the company you’re trying to annoy and crush.

The HTC Hero will no doubt be a big hit when it hits the American shores, but that hit material is on a slow boat to US carriers. Until then, T-Mobile subscribers are going to enjoy the myTouch 3G(Magic) with it’s new form factor and beefed up 1.5 ROM. When the Hero arrives there will be no “Where’s the beef?” questions because the OS rocks…On paper, and the occasional video. All this can leave a G1 owner feeling a little sad.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times. Google Voice is the greatest thing since Post Toasties, and I’m still patting myself on the back for joining up right away. Well, after all this time and improvements to the service, Google has been promising that they will open Google Voice to the public at large, but that has yet to happen. Guess what? It looks as though that is about to happen very soon, maybe even as soon as today, so says internet chatter.

Seems Google has been busy snatching up a million phone numbers over the last few days, which can only mean they are ready to offer the service to anyone who wants it. And if the rumors of porting your carrier number are true, I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t. Heck, even without that Google Voice is still one of the best services out there.

Everything is going in the the clouds nowadays. I guess it makes sense since everything we deal with on our computers is just x’s and o’s anyway right? So why shouldn’t Opera get in the mix with Apple, Google and Microsoft? Well, they have. Today Opera has announced “Opera Unite” and they promise to reinvent the web.

Run entire Web sites from your local computer with the Opera Unite Web Server. After selecting the folder containing your Web site, you can share and host it from the given Opera Unite URL. Opera Unite will automatically recognize index files and create the Web site as you designed it.

Media Player
Rock out wherever you are by accessing your MP3s and playlists from any machine. After selecting the folder containing your playlist, use the Opera Unite direct link to play your tracks directly in any modern Web browser.

Photo Sharing
Share your photos direct from your PC, without uploading them online. Once you select your photo folder, the photo-sharing service will create a thumbnail image gallery of your photos. Clicking the thumbnail will present the photo in its original resolution.

The Lounge

A Helsinki, Finland–based company conducted its second annual Global Habbo Youth Survey Brand for 2009. After surveying 112,000 teens between 11 and 19 in over 30 countries, the study found that in the U.S., MySpace and YouTube were Kings. Out of the 112,000, 4,500 of the teens were from the U.S. Those teens tend to gravitate more to MySpace over Facebook.

Worldwide saw different results. Facebook came in second to YouTube as chief among teens, with MySpace coming in 4th. But these figures should probably be taken with a grain of salt since Habbo is in the business of competing for the business of teens.

Everyone itching to get their search on using the brand new revamped Microsoft search engine Bing, can begin doing so now. Yup, Microsoft has unleashed their war machine two days early against the longtime champ Google and contender Yahoo search.

All twittering you do all day long can sometimes get confusing.  Who tweeted what, what was my tweet and where did her tweet go?  If you’ve ever accidentally deleted a tweet that you really wish you could have back, now there is a solution for your Social Networking ills.   Tweleted will get in there and do it’s best to get that important lost message back.

How reliable is Tweleted?

Unknown. It can, and probably will, miss some deletions and even describe extant Tweets as deleted. Tweleted cannot tell the difference between tweets that have been deleted and those vanished temporarily through Twitter database problems.

How is this possible?

Deleting a message from Twitter itself doesn’t delete it from other sites, including search.twitter.com. Tweleted works by automatically comparing the results from the main Twitter API with those from search.twitter.com; anything that appears in the latter but not in the former is likely to have been deleted!

How far can this search back?

Depends on the user and how the Twitter API is feeling. Generally up to about 1000 messages or four months, whichever comes first, but that can vary a lot.

See, everything gets addressed in good time.  However, now you’ll have to be much more careful with what you tweet.

Fans of chatting in GMail (like myself) will be really happy to hear this news coming from the Google team.  I think it’s safe to assume that if you like Google’s GMail, Reader and the tons of other great apps from Google, then you probably enjoy using iGoogle as well.  Now the home page that allows you to do just about everything from one place is closer to being the one stop shop it’s aspiring to be by bringing “Chat” to it’s interface.

The IM client that allows users to converse instantly while using GMail can now be used from any of your tabs in iGoogle.

Similar to the chat feature on Gmail, people will be able to send instant messages to their colleagues, friends and family straight from their iGoogle page. We’ve made this easy. If you’re already a Gmail chat user, all your current chat settings will apply to iGoogle, so things will work the way you like in both places. But even more exciting is that you’ll even be able to chat with friends who don’t yet have a Gmail address — any email address will do. All you have to do is invite them as a chat buddy, and if they accept your invitation and sign up for iGoogle with their personal email account, their name becomes just a click away right on your page. Don’t want to be bothered while you’re checking out the latest news or reading your emails? You have a couple of options to hid the chat feature. You can either click the chat “options” link and selecting “hide chat,” or sign off completely by selecting “sign out of chat.”

It’s worth noting that this feature may have some kinks, so we ask for your patience as we work through them. Here at Google, it’s common practice for us to involve our users as early possible so we can make sure we get it right. We’ll also be rolling this feature out slowly, so if you don’t see it on your iGoogle page and you simply can’t wait to check it out, feel free to opt in by going to www.google.com/ig/v2invite.

A little note for our Catholic friends.  YouTube is now the host of the Popes very own YouTube channel.  From this day forth (actually, it went up a few days ago) viewers can log on and watch the Pope address many issues, as if you were in Rome, on holiday.  New School meeting Old School never had more meaning.

When Google announced that it would be releasing its very own Browser, the tech computer loving world got a collective smile.  When it was discovered that it would be built on Apple’s WebKit open source rendering engine, Mac fans Smiled big.  Then the hammer, it will be released for Windows only at first with no word on when it would come to Apple.  Strike up the New Orleans Funeral.

If you’re a Mac user but you can also use a PC, then there is a good chance that you’ve experienced Chrome, which makes the Mac no show that much more painful.  Chrome may not have all the bells and whistles like Firefox or Opera, heck not even Safari, but man is it fast.  Lighting fast.  And after you use it once, it’s hard to go back to any other browser.  

But it looks as though the time when MacOSX users can surf the web at blazing speeds is coming close.  In a recent interview with Cnet, Brian Rakowski, Chrome’s product manager said that Google hopes to have the Mac version ready and out before the first half of 2009 closes down.  Two things hurt about this statement.

But we can take solace in the fact that Google is working hard to make it happen, and in fact, there is a Mac test shell available now. 

“That team now is able to render most Web pages pretty well. But in terms of the user experience, it’s very basic,” Rakowski said of the Mac version. “We have not spent any time building out features. We’re still iterating on making it stable and getting the architecture right.”

So looks like we can add another to the list of “looking forward to” for this year.  I for one can’t wait to use Chrome on my Macs.

I can’t really chide Palm for jumping on the bandwagon here, because let’s all be honest about this, Palm really started all of this in the first place.   All the way down to the touchscreen which has become the main ingredient for a brand new and successful phone.   If the concept of a store for Palm is nothing new because PalmOS Software  has had an online home for years, it’s just that its mobile now so it gives it a look of follow the leader, in this case the leader being Apple. 

It looks that way but it is not because as I said, Palm has had a Software store online for many, many years.  But now PalmOS users and Windows Mobile users can get all those thousands of titles right from the comfort of their mobile phones with the new mobile version of the site which looks as though it may be right on time for the introduction of a new device which will need a whole host of new Software titles.  And there is nothing wrong with that!
