iPhone and iOS users are going to love the look and feel of the new and improved Google Mobile App. For starters, it is no longer called ‘Google Mobile App’, the new name is ‘Google Search App’. You may want to write that down somewhere so you don;t forget.

With the new name comes new features and a new slick look. If you’ve used search on your computer you will recognized the look and feel of this new version, bringing that handy side panel to the iPhone with the help of swipe.

First, you’ll see that there are now more ways to interact with the app. When browsing through search results or looking at a webpage, you can swipe down to see the search bar or change your settings. For those who use other Google apps, there’s an Apps button at the bottom of the screen for rapid access to the mobile versions of our products.

We also included a new toolbar that will make it easier for you to filter your results. You can open this toolbar by swiping from left to right — either before you search or once you’ve got your results. If you only want images, just tap “Images,” and the results will update as shown:

Second, we’ve made it easier to pick up searching where you left off. If you leave the app and come back later, you’ll be able either to start a new search right away (just tap in the search box to type, hit the microphone button to do a voice search or tap on the camera icon to use Google Goggles) or get back to exactly where you were by tapping on the lower part of the page.

Finally, there are a number of improvements we’ve made to everything else you love in the app, including Google Goggles, Voice Search, Search with My Location, Gmail unread counts and more. There’s a lot in the app, so we’ve added a simple help feature to let you explore it. Access this by tapping the question mark above the Google logo.

One day before the iPhone 4 actually goes on sale at all Verizon stores across the country, the online pre-order sales are back ‘online’. Yep, if you want to order your iPhone 4, you can now once again do so by going to the VZW store and ordering it up. You can now also go to the Apple store online and pre-order yours there. However, both options will have you waiting until around the 18th of February, that’s a far off date when you consider the fact that the coveted device goes on sale officially tomorrow.

But there you go, now you have options.

If you have ever used Google Translate on your computer, you know how much of an amazing little app it is, not to mention hours of fun. Well if you are a iPhone or iPod Touch owner, the good times have just come to your iOS handheld. Need a quick translation? Pick the language you need to translate to, click the microphone and simply say the words, bamm, its there.

And the app also includes all of the major features of the web app, including the ability to view dictionary results for single words, access your starred translations and translation history even when offline, and support romanized text like Pinyin and Romaji.

You can download Google Translate now from the App Store globally. The app is available in all iOS supported languages, but you’ll need an iPhone or iPod touch iOS version 3 or later.

If you were of quick and nibble fingers a few days ago, you were one of the first and as it turns out ‘only’ to click “Submit” on your iPhone 4 pre order. If that was you, along with a few other very happy Verizon customers this morning, your precious either arrived or will most likely be there shortly.

Reports are begin to hit the inter-webs, that a certain (i) device with a Verizon branding has shown up on a few doorsteps across the frozen country. Expect a lot of online video’s showing the VZW setup from exciting subscribers who simply can’t contain their geek glee!

The flood gates will be opening soon, and when they do, tens, maybe hundreds of Verizon customers will charge the gates to get their hands on a CDMA first of it’s kind VZW iPhone 4.  Those who wish to stay away from the lines and turmoil can get their pre-order on tomorrow, February 4th, so says Verizon.  If I were you, I would opt for the pre-order.

For those who just simply have to be a part of the mob scene, Verizon says that doors will open at 7AM where ever you are.  So get plenty of exorcise and map out the locations of Starbucks and Verizon stores.  Preparation is key.

You can go ahead and rest easy folks, your retirement savings and pension are still intact, Verizon is promising to not raid your bank account for the privilege of owning and using a iPhone 4 on their network. With Verizon’s reputation, and the known past deeds of AT&T, speculation mounted before the official announcement that if Verizon were to carry the iPhone 4, VZW would most likely need to open a new financing department so consumers could use it. But, much to our surprise, when the announcement was made, Verizon gave no indication that the price of using it would be anymore than the price to use the Motorola Droid.

Now with this slide, confirmation is well in hand and potential users can look forward to an iPhone 4 experience that doesn’t rake them over the coals.

Of course that’s with the standard new two-year pre-requisite. There is no real difference to speak of on the Verizon version over the AT&T version. There is a slight difference in button placement for antenna purpose, which may make it necessary for anyone with a iPhone 4 case to get a new one. There is no 4G version as of yet, and to my knowledge, no word on the arrival of a 4G version.

Enough with the devs and the talk of what it will do, it’s time to get it done. Looks like this is the week that it’ll get done as word on the Apple street is saying that iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch will be large and in charge by this Friday. Some reports are saying the update will come as early as tomorrow, Thursday, but consensus brings it in on Friday. Whichever the actual day it lands on, (i) devices holders will be looking at improvements and additions to their favorite (i) device. And that ain’t all folks. Word also has it the the MacOSX is headed for a software update as well as iTunes. However, that little nugget known as ‘Airprint’ wont be included in this particular round of ups.

Good news one and all, Skyfire is back in the AppStore! That’s of course assuming that you are one of the quick and lucky. You may remember last week when Skyfire announced it’s answer to all of your mobile Safari Flash video woes, with its new and improved browser that handles Flash content for you. Many people heard the news and their servers crashed, causing Apple to pull the app.

Skyfire is now saying that the problem is fixed, sorta. The app is now up in the U.S., store on a first come first serve basis.

So what are you reading this for, go get it!

Curious wouldn’t you say? Why would T-Mobile, the nation’s number 4 carrier and only other major GSM provider strut out cables for the iPhone? Sure, there are a handful of folks that have jailbroken their iPhones to run on T-Mobs network, and by handful I mean a rather large hand — but is it enough to warrant the stocking of products to service those jailbroken accessory needs?

Or could we be looking at the foretelling of the T-Mobile branded iPhone? Since we are hearing that the iPhone maybe unlocked completely in Europe, allowing potential iPhone shoppers to go where ever they want with their precious, could it be that something similar is coming our way in the good ol U.S of A?

Yeah, don’t get your hopes up, that’s very doubtful, but not out of the realm of possibility. The iPhone is on it’s way to Verizon, effectively ending the long stranglehold AT&T has had on the popular device, it is conceivable that Apple could produced an unlocked GSM version, jack the price and watch the dollars flow.

Or, t-Mobile could just simply be servicing the needs of their Jailbroken friends.

You heard about it and were probably skeptical on the odds that Apple would let it through, but it has happened folks, Flash video is coming to an iPhone near you. But don’t get too excited, there are caveats. Skyfire Mobile 2.0 is bringing iPhone users Flash content through Skyfire servers. Meaning, whenever you reach a site with a Flash video, Skyfire will take that video, convert it into a HTML5 format and give it back to you as a thumbnail. Just click the thumbnail and away you go.

This of course means time. After you wait for the page to load, you will then need to wait for Skyfire’s servers to do their thing. Then when you click your presented thumbnail, you’ll wait again for the clip to load. Even if it’s 20 seconds, that’s 20 seconds that could have been spent doing something else.

I’m not complaining mind you, I’m just sayin’.

Also, do not expect to play any Flash enabled games or watch anything on Hulu. The Skyfire translating servers do not work for games or Hulu. The word on the street is the app will be ready for consumption this Thursday, that’s tomorrow. Yes, that does mean that Apple did in fact give this app that runs on top of Safari for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, the okay. I know, you’re shocked. Watch the clip while you catch your breath.

Have a look at what’s flying out over the broadbands in AppStore world.  For weeks now, Angry Birds in all it’s many versions, has been the number one selling app for both the iPhone and the iPad.  At this point one would think that everyone who owns a (i) device, also owns Angry Birds.   If you’re that odd hold out, you might as well give it a try and fit in.

Also if note is the “Son’s Of Anarchy” app.  If you love the show, and I know you do, then you’ll love the app.

Just when you thought there weren’t enough places to pick up a iPhone when you need one, Target rocks you world with a iPhone availability announcement. Starting this November 7th, Target stores across the nation that include a ‘Target Mobile’ within their doors, will sell the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 to perspective buyers.

Sorry, there will be no deals, coupons or Red Light Specials on the price of the Apple device. But hey, since you’re going there to pick up a much needed 24 roll pack of toilet paper, you might as well grab an iPhone while your there.

If you thought you had a secret love affair with your iPhone, a tabooed love that you could never share with the world, go ahead and let it out because others do too. Turns out the little phone that Steve made is now the number one smartphone in America, and that’s with it being on one carrier folks. Apple now has an impressive 17% world market share, taking the bet to RIM which saw it’s Blackberry line get beaten for the first time in years. RIM sits at around 15%.

But in the U.S, Apple’s iPhone came on even stronger and took a 26% share, trouncing RIM which sits at 24.2%. Steve isn’t the only who gets bragging rights though. According to the new Canalys’ findings, Android is the big winner when it comes to OS choice. The system that Google made now has a 43.6% U.S, market share.

Palm and WebOS don’t even really register, while Microsoft sits at a 3.0% market share. These finding from Canalys’ are pretty remarkable when you consider the fact that the iPhone is on one U.S., carrier and Android is basically a brand new OS. This also shows the fact that RIM needs to step up their game. BB OS6 and form factors that have not really changed in 5 years aren’t going to cut it anymore.

Fortune has confirmed that a Verizon iPhone will be released in early 2011.)” That ladies and gentlemen is the word as laid down by ‘Fortune’ magazine, so it must be true. K, that was meant to be read with a hint of sarcasm. Not that I don’t believe the statement, just that idea that if Fortune says it’s so, than it’s so.

But we all new this to be true because we can all fill it in our bones, and since Verizon is in the business of making a lot of money, Apple wants to make a lot of money and Fortune magazine loves the green stuff, you can go ahead and bet a small fortune that come sometime in early 2011, the iPhone will be an official big red offering.

It’s not going to bring you coffee in the morning, nor will it read your mind and send emails before you can even type them, but the newly updated version of Gmail will be easier to use for iPhone Mobile Safari users. Speed of scrolling and scrollbars that stand on screen. Take a look at the new digs from the mouth of Google.

First, scrolling is snappier: the speed of scrolling reflects the speed of your swipe gesture. This is helpful for long conversations where a few quick flicks will get you to the information you need much faster than before. Second, the toolbars stay on screen while you’re scrolling rather than moving down into view after each scroll. Being able to access your toolbars from any point on the page should make it easier to triage your email and move around the app.

If you use Gmail in your mobile browser a lot, you may have noticed that we recently tried several different variations of these buttons. We‘ve iterated on the design and made improvements based on your feedback. Good news iPhone fans, or should I say iPhone fans that have been waiting for the iPhone 4 in version White to come out? That promised other than black iPhone model is soon to be reality. The Apple Store app has updated with a “White iPhone 4″ choice. But you can’t have it yet, not until it actually becomes available. What you can do however is reserve yours by selecting, and then reserving yours through the Apple Store. Once it becomes ready, you’ll get notification, you can then enter the necessary info, tap your bank, and sit back with a smile on your face.

No matter how many Android devices come to market. No matter how many Blackberry devices try and light a Torch, or Windows 7 handset manufactures try to strike hope and fear, the iPhone, still to this day, continues to be the most talked about and sought out handset on the market.

This of course means rumors, lots and lots of rumors. Rumors of a AT&T exclusivity departure have been swirling for over two years now, with nary a shred of evidence to back up the claims. But now WSJ is reporting definitively, that the phone that Steve made is going to Verizon.

Reports are now saying that there will be a build up of supply by the end of 2010 for an early 2011 VZW iPhone 5 release, complete with the necessary CDMA radio. For those jumping up and down right now, just remember even though this news is beginning to ring with more truth now, this rumor has been out there for quite some time. Also, if you think the big red is going to be any easier on your wallet, and on restrictions when it comes to the VZW iPhone, you’re crazy.

Well it’s not the real deal Flash appeal on your iOS device, but it is the next best thing for those who want the web the way the web actually is. Apple has sent out a Marshall to round up all the Jailbreakers who broke out of Cupertino. His name is Marshall iOS 4.0.2 for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and he deputized 3.2.2 to go after the iPad. Both are armed with a bullet killing fix to plug the security hole found in the PDF reader, which is also coincidentally that exact route taking by a very popular jailbreaking app to go unnamed. It is recommended for all users of either device and should probably applied, albeit begrudgingly by those who broke free. The security hole can be utilized to inflict serious damage, so it’s definitely important to get it plugged up. Don’t worry, the Dev-Team will find a new way t break you out.

Let me start out this review of the software SlingMedia software title “Slingplayer,” by stating that I am still using an older model of the Slingbox tuner, so none of the channels that play glorious HD content can be streamed to my devices via the mobile software.  If you’re like me and slingbox has tickled your fancy, you can still opt into their 50% off program.  The program allows one to enter the serial number of an older purchased Slingbox and receive a 50% coupon for the purchase of a brand new Slingbox for HD viewing.    I haven’t done it yet, but that day is soon, I need my HD!!!

If you are unaware of exactly what slingplayer is, then either you don’t have a television, an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android device, GSM Blackberry, PalmOS device, Windows Mobile device, Symbian Smartphone or any of the above combination.  If you had any combination you would already know that their is no better way to watch TV on the go than Slingplayer.

My first encounter with the software was back in my Palm 700p/755p days.  Once installed I thought the heavens had opened and graced me with a taste of the  future.   My television, my shows, my recorded shows any and everywhere I went.  I’m not a TV junkie, but I toured a lot, and there’s no better way to kill hours upon hours on the road than to watch the stuff you actually want to watch.   Then I switched to Blackberry and came back to the present, Slingplayer was not available for the Blackberry OS at that time.   The one and only regret I had after making the OS switch.   Then to add insult to injury, SlingMedia made it available for the Blackberry OS, hurray!!  But not for CDMA Blackberry devices, boo.

After that, SlingMedia made it available for the iPhone/iPod Touch, which meant handheld TV viewing finally met a large handheld screen.   I grabbed both Apple devices and soon after picked up a Sprint HTC Hero Android device.  That’s when I remembered, ‘hey, I can use that mythical magical piece of software again”. So here I am months and months later feeling like a part of the future again, albeit without the added advantage of HD viewing.

I have installed it on both my iPhone and iPod to use over wifi (AT&T has recently cleared Slingplayer for use over 3G) and on my latest pickup, an Android 2.1 powered Sprint HTC EVO 4G, which can be used over my Sprint data connection and wifi.  On all three devices Slingplayer runs like butter, like butter!!!  One note: at those times when I have been able to latch on to those fabled Sprint 4G speeds, Slingplayer controls have run just as fast as my regular television.    I note this because users will experience a bit of lag when changing channels and or selecting recorded shows, but the lag doesn’t make for an unpleasant experience, it’s just the nature of the technology verses the speed of ones connection, 4G seems to be the answer to both.  Honestly, if you cannot yet take advantage of 4G speeds, don’t fret, your Slingplayer experience will not be lacking.

I took a few screenshots of Slingplayer running on all three devices, but since I cannot show you the beauty of HD television on any of them, I have opted to use the screenshots provided by the SlingMedia website.   Anyone wondering if the newest versions of Slingplayer Mobile for the latest devices will work with the older Slingboxes, the answer is yes, even though the software will tell you at ‘start up’ that it will not.  This is the reason for not showing my screens shots.   Don’t get me wrong, my viewing isn’t severely hindered, heck, I’ve been watching non HD TV since I was a child, but when you like a product as much as I like this one, it should always be shown off in the best possible light.

The controls for the iPhone OS version are beautifully laid out.  Tapping brings them up and allows the user to change channels, pause, play, rewind, all of those things one would do if at home in front of the favorite TV set with ones trusty DVR remote control.   Setup gives the user the option to select which provider to sync with, and adjust itself accordingly.   One feature I find a bit janky on this version is the ‘Favorites Setup.’   Users can set their favorite channels for quick access on the mobile device.   The control for this is a bit cumbersome as it calls for a lot of back and forth also, for me at least, selecting ‘Cartoon Network’ only gives me the East Coast channel.  I’m on the West Coast and would rather have my time zone.  There seems to be an issue when it comes to selecting when a network has more than one channel, such as Cartoon Network and TVLand.  I have found this issue to exist when trying to favorite a channels, but keep in mind that this may be a result of the ‘non-HD’ channels not appearing in the menu, something I cannot verify until I have an HD Slingbox.

Now that I have the HTC EVO 4G, I have to say that my mobile experience with Slingplayer is best enjoyed on the EVO.  Not becuase the software is better per say.  The 4:3 display can make it feel as though I’m walking around with my kitchen set.  Large, crisp and clear viewing along with the kickstand and Sprint speeds make it that much more of an enjoyable experience.

Tapping the menu brings the controls up onto the screen, from that point on, tapping the screen buttons provide the same controls as your remote.  Tap the screen again and the controls disappear, giving you full screen viewing.  Keep in mind that with an older Slingbox you will only get small portion of the screen to use as default.   The aspect ratio can be changed, but with an older tuner you’ll only be stretching the image.   But this too is larger and better than if you used Slingplayer on a Palm device, and without a doubt far more crisp and clear.  Pressing the “MISC” button brings up more controls like program guide, list, menu, format, channel up and down and more.   The ‘List’ button brings up your ‘DirecTV’ recorded shows, which users can select and watch.  These controls can also be pulled up by pressing the ‘menu’ button on your Android device.

There is no “Favorites” option at the moment for the Android version, hopefully that will change soon.  But that’s the only drawback that I have come across with the Android version over the iPhone OS version.  When you compare the two minor issues I’ve found on both versions with any of the other mobile TV applications out there, there really is no comparison and those issues can be quickly forgotten.

I don’t think that I can stress enough that this is your television, the way you use it at home, anywhere you are in the world.   Slingplayer for mobile remains  in my view on the top of the food chain of mobile applications.   If you own a Android device or an iPhone OS device and want the ability to kill time with TV time while away from home, there is no better investment than Sling.

And yes, it is an investment.  Along with the cost of the box of your choice, the software will set you back $30.  If you happen to be on a carrier with one of those “unlimited” but “limited” data packages, and or your internet provider has a limited data rate, users are warned to be very careful with how much viewing is done away from home.

Also, don’t forget the added benefit of being able to download a free Slingplayer onto your Mac or PC.  With your Slingbox, you can watch your TV on your Laptop or desktop anywhere you have a connection, with all the same controls available on the mobile version.

I very highly recommend Slingplayer for Mobile, it is a tried and true marvel in the mobile experience.

OOOoooooH SNAP!!! It”s about to be on in the Android/Droid X community. Instead of deciding to leave bad enough alone, Apple has posted yet another clip to demonstrate solidarity in the death grip of cellular reception on handheld community, or DGCRHH. This time they decided to take on Motorola and the brand new Droid X with as you will see, a demonstration of reception chocking by the likes of a full grasp on the offending device. This will undoubtedly send shockwaves deep into the Android community with cries of foul ringing out across the web.

But turning a blind eye to the bashing that is sure to come, Apple has gone ahead with a tightly produced clip to show us all that their iPhone 4 cellular death grip problem isn’t alone in the smartphone universe. Buying into it, is entirely up to you.

The Apple taste a lot sweeter today as news is coming in that the US Government has just made unlocking your device, legal. The Library of Congress says that owners of the iPhone and or any other device currently being locked down, can now download 3rd party apps and install them as they please. Of course to do this on an iPhone means that one has to Jailbreak it, this too is now “Legal” so says the Library of Congress.

This also means that owners can take their devices and go anywhere they want, provided the spectrum allows.

This is killer news for iPhone owners who want to jump the AT&T ship and head over to T-Mobile for a bit of (I don’t see the difference) action. You can bet there is a lot of smarting going on over in the Apple offices right now, and a whole lot of high fiving at T-Mobile corporate.

Librarian of Congress Announces DMCA Section 1201 Rules for
Exemptions Regarding Circumvention of Access-Control Technologies

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington today released the following statement:

Section 1201(a)(1) of the copyright law requires that every three years I am to determine whether there are any classes of works that will be subject to exemptions from the statute’s prohibition against circumvention of technology that effectively controls access to a copyrighted work. I make that determination at the conclusion of a rulemaking proceeding conducted by the Register of Copyrights, who makes a recommendation to me. Based on that proceeding and the Register’s recommendation, I am to determine whether the prohibition on circumvention of technological measures that control access to copyrighted works is causing or is likely to cause adverse effects on the ability of users of any particular classes of copyrighted works to make noninfringing uses of those works. The classes of works that I designated in the previous proceeding expire at the end of the current proceeding unless proponents of a class prove their case once again.

This is the fourth time that I have made such a determination. Today I have designated six classes of works. Persons who circumvent access controls in order to engage in noninfringing uses of works in these six classes will not be subject to the statutory prohibition against circumvention.

As I have noted at the conclusion of past proceedings, it is important to understand the purposes of this rulemaking, as stated in the law, and the role I have in it. This is not a broad evaluation of the successes or failures of the DMCA. The purpose of the proceeding is to determine whether current technologies that control access to copyrighted works are diminishing the ability of individuals to use works in lawful, noninfringing ways. The DMCA does not forbid the act of circumventing copy controls, and therefore this rulemaking proceeding is not about technologies that control copying. Nor is this rulemaking about the ability to make or distribute products or services used for purposes of circumventing access controls, which are governed by a different part of section 1201.

In this rulemaking, the Register of Copyrights received 19 initial submissions proposing 25 classes of works, many of them duplicative in subject matter, which the Register organized into 11 groups and published in a notice of proposed rulemaking seeking comments on the proposed classes. Fifty-six comments were submitted. Thirty-seven witnesses appeared during the four days of public hearings in Washington and in Palo Alto, California. Transcripts of the hearings, copies of all of the comments, and copies of other information received by the Register have been posted on the Copyright Office’s website.

The six classes of works are:

(1) Motion pictures on DVDs that are lawfully made and acquired and that are protected by the Content Scrambling System when circumvention is accomplished solely in order to accomplish the incorporation of short portions of motion pictures into new works for the purpose of criticism or comment, and where the person engaging in circumvention believes and has reasonable grounds for believing that circumvention is necessary to fulfill the purpose of the use in the following instances:
(i) Educational uses by college and university professors and by college and university film and media studies students;
(ii) Documentary filmmaking;
(iii) Noncommercial videos

(2) Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.

(3) Computer programs, in the form of firmware or software, that enable used wireless telephone handsets to connect to a wireless telecommunications network, when circumvention is initiated by the owner of the copy of the computer program solely in order to connect to a wireless telecommunications network and access to the network is authorized by the operator of the network.

(4) Video games accessible on personal computers and protected by technological protection measures that control access to lawfully obtained works, when circumvention is accomplished solely for the purpose of good faith testing for, investigating, or correcting security flaws or vulnerabilities, if:
(i) The information derived from the security testing is used primarily to promote the security of the owner or operator of a computer, computer system, or computer network; and
(ii) The information derived from the security testing is used or maintained in a manner that does not facilitate copyright infringement or a violation of applicable law.

(5) Computer programs protected by dongles that prevent access due to malfunction or damage and which are obsolete. A dongle shall be considered obsolete if it is no longer manufactured or if a replacement or repair is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace; and

(6) Literary works distributed in ebook format when all existing ebook editions of the work (including digital text editions made available by authorized entities) contain access controls that prevent the enabling either of the book’s read-aloud function or of screen readers that render the text into a specialized format.

All of these classes of works find their origins in classes that I designated at the conclusion of the previous rulemaking proceeding, but some of the classes have changed due to differences in the facts and arguments presented in the current proceeding. For example, in the previous proceeding I designated a class that enable film and media studies professors to engage in the noninfringing activity of making compilations of film clips for classroom instruction. In the current proceeding, the record supported an expansion of that class to enable the incorporation of short portions of motion pictures into documentary films and noncommercial videos for the purpose of criticism or comment, when the person engaging in circumvention reasonably believes that it is necessary to fulfill that purpose. I agree with the Register that the record demonstrates that it is sometimes necessary to circumvent access controls on DVDs in order to make these kinds of fair uses of short portions of motion pictures.

The good folks over at Mozilla are beside themselves. They have officially submitted their ‘its not quite Firefox’ Firefox Home to the Apple approval board. Now that Opera Mini has had success on the iPhone, Mozilla is really liking their chances of a fast approval process. That of course remains to be seen, but it’s nice to see a company so giddy!

The end user on the other hand, well… It looks like Firefox, smells like Firefox, but it’s not Firefox so it may very well be a little disappointing.

Firefox Home is a free application that provides access to your Firefox desktop history, bookmarks and open tabs on your iPhone. Firefox Home enables access to the websites you need on the go by picking up where you left off with your desktop browsing. On Monday, Apple released firmware 4.0 for the iPhone and iPod touch devices. This of course was a major upgrade.

As advised, you shouldn’t have upgraded your devices if you have previously relied on our tools for hacktivation and/or a carrier unlock.

With that said, today we are releasing PwnageTool 4.0 PwnageTool 4.01

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST CAREFULLY, THERE ARE KNOWN UPGRADE TRAPS AND DIFFERENT UPGRADE SCENARIOS THAT NEED TO BE FULLY UNDERSTOOD AND CONSIDERED BEFORE USING THESE TOOLS.

Each supported device has few different scenarios that users need to consider when performing the upgrades, you need to check below and perform the upgrade in the particular way that matches your current device state.

NB: With PwnageTool 4.0 PwnageTool 4.01 certain devices are not supported this is because they are not supported in iOS 4.0 or they are not supported by our software. We’re working on ways to get past these restrictions.

PwnageTool 4.0 PwnageTool 4.01 only recognizes the official IPSWs that came out yesterday. If you had developer access to the “4.0 GM” IPSWs, do not try to use those.

There’s a boatload of information that must be read very carefully before even attempting the break, so read carefully and proceed with caution.

It’s not just the Apple Store that has had it hard today, AT&T is feeling the desire as well. The rush to receive an iPhoe without the hassle of waiting in line on launch day, has put the Apple Store in the slow lane, with the occasional crashes. Apple put up a notice informing pre-order hunters that AT&T is taking pre-orders as well, apparently folks got the message because AT&T is now saying they are sold out of pre-order, pre-orders.

“Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We’ll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24.”

Yeah, you tried but it looks like those lines will be unavoidable. then again, you could wait until the 25th and sit through a grueling day of watching others enjoy their iPhone 4′s.

Well it’s not Fennec or mobile Firefox, but it will be ‘Firefoxie’ and it will be available soon. Of course that really depends on the approval police at the AppStore. ‘Firefox Home’ is the name and your bookmarks are the game. The iPhone app will allow users to carry around their Firefox bookmarks along with ‘recent visits’. The app will sync with your desktop client and keep you up-to-date. Pages will load inside the app and will hopefully be fast, at least half as fast as you’re used to on your desktop.

Mozilla says it will be available soon, so knowing Apple as we all do, this could take awhile. In the meantime, read a little and watch a little, this will help to really get your hopes up.

Why is this useful?

1. Left work in a hurry? You can pick up where you left off with access to the list of tabs you just had open on your desktop.
2. Need those directions to that restaurant you were just reading about on your desktop? The confirmation code for your flight? Just start typing in the Awesome Bar and those pages will be right at your fingertips.
3. Does it drive you crazy to have to enter the full URL on your iPhone that you’ve visited several times from your desktop? You won’t need to anymore with this app. Mozilla

Really want an iPhone 3GS? Well you’re in luck, that is if you don’t mind a trip down to your friendly local WalMart. Oh and signing up for another 2-year contract with AT&T. Oh wait, one more thing. You must be willing to be happy with your 3GS after the brand new iPhone 4.0 goes on sale next month.

If all those caveats are cool with you, run out and get yourself a 3GS for only $97. That’s right, WalMart is making room and Apple is helping by giving the chain their blessing. Now the iPhone 3GS, the device that was the talk of the town last year has now been stripped of $100.
