Since WebOS is the new flava, and Palm has decided to shy away from Windows Mobile, it was only a matter of time before a device like the treo Pro would go by the wayside. It looks as though that time has come. Eagle eyes have noticed the sudden absence of the WM powered device on the Palm website, meaning Palm is done with it. Carriers however are a different story. Anyone willing to shell out cash on a device that is old and no longer supported, can grab one in places like Sprint for example, while supplies last as the saying goes.

Yep, that’s right!  The treo Pro running Windows Mobile 6.1 that I am sure somebody was desperately waiting for is now finally at long last ready and willing on the Sprint network.  It had a few false starts but it is now a go for $199 on contract $549 to do what you please with it.

It’s a quiet launch from both Palm and Sprint but no one is blaming either company, the Palm Pre is waiting in the wings, and phone God forbid, they wouldn’t want any funds allocated for a Pre going to anything else.

Well we had heard the rumors that a Palm Device would be arriving on the Sprint Network on March 15th, now we think we know which device.  The long awaited Windows Mobile 6.1 running treo Pro will finally hit the shelves for $199 on contract, finally.

This may sound a tad strange for followers of the Stateside treo Pro launch, but rumors are now swirling that Alltel will have the Windows Mobile 6.1 device for sale on March 5th.   Now under the warm comforting arms of Verizon, Alltel could be the first American carrier to offer the treo, beating out Sprint who should have released the device weeks ago.   But the general consensus is that Sprint is holding back for the coming of the new Palm Jesus phone, the Palm Pre.

If this is indeed true, the treo Pro will go for $199 after all the rebates are applied.  If it isn’t true, you’ll continue to wait for an American CDMA carrier to release it.

Samsung Instinct fans could find themselves with a choice between two siblings come this April.  It seems that a baby brother was born to the Samsung Instinct family and Sprint subscribers will be able to adopt him on April 19th if leaked info holds up.  No word on pricing and there are no specs yet, but expect it to be a little less and do a little less than it’s bigger brother.  That’s a safe bet right?

Also, the treo Pro on again off again saga continues with a tentative date of March 15th.   However, I wouldn’t hold my breath on this one.  Sprint seems to be having some internal struggles with the WinMo device, and as I stated yesterday, I think they would much rather play the Palm Pre game then spend any undue resources on a device that’s dated before it’s even released.

The Treo 755p is the last in the long list of Treo’s yours truly was happy to use before switching over to Blackberry.  Now I am anxiously awaiting the Palm Pre to return me to the Palm fold, unless a miracle happens and the iPhone shows up on Sprint, and we know that’s not going to happen anytime soon. Anyway, it looks as though room is being made for the Palm Pre and a few other models according to a list just leaked and posted on BGR.

Just got an update and a bit of bad news if this holds true, and my source always hold true.  The re-launch of the Sprint treo Pro that was to come this week will be pushed back until February 15th.  The source tells me that Palm is having parts issues that are holding up a wide Sprint release.

It seems that call routing has been a bit of an issue on the treo Pro, so Palm has issued the first patch to fix something on the newest Palm device.

If you are in an active call using bluetooth car kit or bluetooth headset and you receive a second incoming call and you let it ring or you ignore the incoming call, the call will be diverted to Voicemail. The first call remains active but you can no longer hear the caller (the caller can still hear you). The audio has been lost. If you answer the call and swap between calls or reject the call, the issue is not seen.

Grab the unlocked Treo Pro Bluetooth patch  if you are experiencing these problems.

Here’s yet another study that shows the iPhone beating it’s competitors.  Fresh off the iPhone beating out the RAZR for best seller, and J.D Power giving the iPhone the top spot in Business Class, the iPhone is really coming on as the dominate device in the market place.

This new study shows how the iPhone wins in the warranty reliability department.  Customers have far less problems and returns within the first year of ownership over Blackberry and way, way over the Treo.  5.6% for iPhone, 11.9% for Blackberry and 16.2% for Treo.  

The iPhone sure is getting a lot of good news this week.

Not quite sure why anyone would still be willing to plop down $299 on a two-year for an aging Treo 700wx.  Apparently Verizon feels the way I do and they are ready to axe it, give it the ole heave ho according to the folks over at WMExperts.

But that’s not all that’s been revealed.  Seems that the Treo800w, poor step-brother to the treo Pro will be making its debut on the network on October 12th. This coming from pushed Verizon reps.  

 

There’s no real word on when and how much, but during yesterday’s quarterly conference call, Palm let fly that the Windows Mobile 6.1 running Treo Pro will be available to AT&T customers.  As I announced yesterday, Verzion customers will get the Treo800w…..The lesser of the two.  Oh Dang!

Ahh the Treo 680, we barely new ye, really, we barely new ye.  The Treo 680, Palms quietest Treo (not too many folks have this one) is about to be given the axe by AT&T.  

The Palm Centro has taken it’s place and has done so with a vengeance.  Smaller, far more feature pack and far, far less expensive, the Centro has pushed the 680 onto the back shelf, and AT&T needs room.

The silent but deadly word on the preverbal streets is that the Verizon Network may be ready to make those who just updated their outdated treo700wx to the outdated Windows Mobile 6.0 feel a bit silly.  Rumor has it that some chatty Verizon reps let loose word that the Windows Mobile 6.1 running Treo800w will be ready for Verizon customers in October.  Mind you, this is just a rumor.

But take heart 700wx owners, you’ll have the last laugh seeing as how the treo Pro makes the Treo800w look like a bootleg WM smartphone.  You may have notice, since Palm introduced it, scuttle about the 800w as all but disappeared.

This Treo Pro is a better looking device than the treo 800w, and I am sure most that bought the 800w, will be kicking themselves.

And although I am glad to see Palm making some attempt at design change, I would really like to a new Treo or comparable device running the new Palm OS, hell I’ll even settle for an updated Garnet.  Palm seems to feel as though they are in competition with HTC, which frankly, is a battle they will lose.

TreoCentral is reporting on news concerning Palm and millions of new units being ordered for next year (2009).  According to China Economic News Service, Palm has put in a large order for new smartphones, but sadly they are all Windows Mobile.

This started out as great and interesting news, but ended up as (meh) pretty quickly.  I one who doesn’t believe Palm serves us nor themselves well buy selling another phone with Windows running on it.   But if you’re looking for that Treo850w, this could be the indication that it is indeed on it’s way.

 

 

Sssh… Don’t tell anyone or repeat this too loud, but Palm has finally released a ROM update fot the Verizon 700p and the Altell Alltel 700wx.

2 full years after it’s release the Verizon 700p will get some help with its freezing and reset issues, just in time for no one to actually still use this phone.  Okay, I know there are die hards out there so for you today is your day, you’ll finally have a chance to use your treo the way you’ve always wanted, without fear.

Both patches should go a long way in fixing a ton of problems that have been persistent on each phone.

  Centroid, the very nice free app from TreoSpot has been updated to 3.9.  For use with your GSM Treo/Centro, Centroid is a location based event reminder.

  The idea is a great one.  Set an alert for a reminder to by dog food when you go to your favorite grocery store.  As soon as you enter the store, you will be reminded.

  You thought you were going to ba able to just tell that new Treo800w what to do over your Bluetooth and it would do it, right out of the box.  Wrong.  But that’s all been fixed now with a update for voice dialing over Bluetooth patch.

 The patch is now available at the Support page of Palm.  This is an extremely fast turnaround for patches and Palm.  

 

 

Reviews of the new Palm Treo 800w are beginning to pop up everywhere.  You haven’t seen one here because, well, I don’t do Windows.  Maybe we can get our resident Windows Guru Aaron, to chime in one day soon.  Until then, the latest review comes to us from [Engadget] who gives it their usual intense run through with plenty of sharp photos.  

The team seems satisfied with it but does chide the new Treo with “Palm has made a fiercely middle-of-the road device’.  Here is an excerpt.

We’d like to be able to say more about what the 800w does on the software side, but the company has done so little to tweak the all-too-familiar Windows Mobile interface that it barely stands apart from the myriad competition. Palm has included a dedicated WiFi button atop the phone to try and simplify WM’s sometimes daunting network configuration options, though it really only gets you half way there. Besides a Today screen tweak which adds location-based search (for gas, food, etc.), the ability to map a contact’s location from their entry in the phone, and the other minor Palm adjustments which accompany their WM devices (decline a call with a text message, for instance), this is business as usual.

Last to get it, first to throw it out.  Verizon is tossing aside the trusty Treo 755p to pay more attention to the sale of the popular Palm Centro.  The Treo 755p wasn’t on Verizon for very long, somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 months, but its sales were not very strong.

If you’re quick you can still grab one on contract at a reduced cost of $99, when they’re gone, they’re gone for good.  Fair thee well Verizon 755p, fair thee well.

Last week I asked, “Is A Treo 800w Still Relevant At $249?” We ran a Poll “Is A New Treo Worth The Asking Price?”  Overwhelmingly the voters said NO.

Now that Sprint just cut the price on the HTC Touch and Samsung Ace Worldphone, this new Treo could see some long backroom storage time.

 

So Palm jumps out with it’s first new Treo since the 755p launch early 07.  As per what seems like the custom, Sprint gets the first dibs on the new device.  The new Treo isn’t a Palm Treo, meaning a device running the PalmOS, it’s a device running the over saturated Windows Mobile platform, an OS you can get on hundreds of devices.  

The Treo launches online Sunday the 13th, ready for all Monday 14th.  Later that day we find out that two very popular Windows Mobile devices are now on the cheap.  The HTC Touch and the SamSung Ace, a phone you can take around the world and use on GSM carriers.  With a two year contract, customers can now pick them up for $100 each.  The brand new Treo goes for $249 on a 2 year contract.

If you’re and avid Palm fan, Treo fanatic and Windows Mobile Lover, then the question is irrelevant, a Treo is A Treo Is a Treo.  However, that is why I ask.  The newest Treo, the 800w is about to spring forth onto the public in 7 days.  It will come with WiFi a 2MP camera and Windows Mobile 6.1, features Palm fans have been screaming for for well over a year.  

But when you have a phone like the Centro for $99 and the litany of other devices from other manufactures out there proving their metal, how easy will it be for you to lock down a two year deal locking you into the Treo800w for $249?  The new iPhone 3G starts at $199, and again, the Centro is $99.

Can you see yourself parting with $249 for a Treo at this stage in the game?

The ROM update for the Verizon 755p is finally available on the Palm Support site.  1.08-VZW is said to improve “the phone application, stability and device usability.”

Set aside an hour per Palm instruction and follow them to the letter to avoid three hours of reset looping.  Package can be found here.

 

A recent leak of Verizon’s road map for the rest of the year, shows the new Treo from Palm, the 800w, arriving sometime late August.  If Verizon’s other Treo dealings are any indication, you can expect that time frame to NOT hold up.  Verizon is notorious for screwing up phones with all their crap and delaying the phones sale date.  This is particularly true when it comes to Treo’s.

Question.  Is anyone still using the Treo 700wx?  Really?  Well good news then, according to TreoCentral you’ll be able to take your 700wx all the way up to Windows Mobile 6.0 soon!  Of course all of your Windows Mobile toting friends are walking around with slick sleek phones loaded with WM 6.1, but who cares, you’re old skool.

Seriously, this has to be a joke or a misprint because we’re talking about dated material here, if Palm/Verizon were serious about fulfilling your WinMob fantasies, they would at least get your antenna wielding Treo up to current snuff.

It looks like those with the Verizon Treo 755p well see an update for their weary hard working Treos.  Internal leaks uncover help on the way.  Stability and usability will be improved which hopefully means no more reseting when trying to go online.  It looks like the annoying Bluetooth connection drops will be addressed as well.  

As a owner of both the Sprint 700p and 755p, I can tell you that win the update finally came for the 700p, which had a lot of the same problems as the Verizon 755p, the update went a long way in fixing a lot of those issues.  So look out for this update this summer.

The Verizon Centro will also see an update with these enhancements:

Improved Versamail. The updates include Gmail setup with support for Gmail IMAP and better Exchange Active Sync Push email support

AOL Instant messenger has better performance (hopefully with less lag!)

I don’t have a GSM Treo or Centro so I can test this out for you and tell if it works or not.  But I can tell you that I really like the idea, so if it works, spot on!  The idea behind Treo Spot is alarms that ring whenever you are in a location that you have set a reminder for.

Say you’re in the grocery store, you’ve been twice but you keep forgetting to get eggs because you keep getting distracted by the WolfBoy on the cover of a magazine.  With Treo spot, set an alarm to go off whenever you enter the grocery store, and mark it, GET EGGS.  

This is a very intriguing program, very interested in seeing it work without a AT&T Centro.

More sketchy details are beginning to emerge about the leaked Treo 850.  Of course it’s all speculation not at all confirmed, but what ever is in these circumstances?  And that’s the way we like it right?  It looks like the new treo will come with WiFi, yep, WiFi.  I’ll wait until you pick yourself up from the floor as I know this is astonishing news, with “Smartphone” with Wifi.

Some other details are the beginnings of a tug-o-war between leakers as this new news calls for 32MB of SDRAM, where BGR, the original leaker called for 100MB.  However, the source, TamsPPC is a Palm developer so there could be more weight to his leak.

 

What do we have here, a brand new never before heard of Treo?  According to BGR, yes. There is a bit of a style turn here, which I must say is far better than the spy shots leaked of the Treo 800w.  I would not be at all surprised if this turns out to be the 800w, as it would make no sense to put that out when you have this.  Obviously this is a WM device so I would have no interest in this particular one, but I am sure that a PALMOS device is sure to come. 

 

Now that there is a slimmer slick new treo, with a 400MHZ processor according to the leaker, there will be plenty to talk about in the Palm community, which is without doubt sorely needed right now.

 

To be fair, when we first broke the news of the coming Treo 800w, I had no real interest even then.  I don’t do Windows so this new Palm had no real appeal to me.  But it was however, a new Palm device.  When we broke the news about the Centro (then Gandolf), I also knew then that I would have no interest, but again, it was a new Palm device.  Way back then my whistle was poised and ready to blow for the coming 800p, which was whispered into my ear as “coming soon”.  Well I’ve been waiting and waiting, and waiting.  In the meantime, that wait as provided enough time for me to put my 755p down and pick up a Blackberry 8830 for awhile.  And as many of you may know already, I was surprised and shocked to discover that I like the darn thing.  Since then RIM has peaked my interest a bit, and other than the name, the Bold looks like quite a device.  It’s one of three new Blackberries that carry with it that wow factor, creating much anticipation.

Are we feeling the same for the 800w?

The Centro, being it’s own little animal, has been a great seller for Palm, but it isn’t stopping the bleeding.  Now, I’m beginning to wonder if RIM’s new offering have opened up a new wound.  A deep and possible life threatening gash that Palm won’t be able to survive from.  What do you do?  I mean as a long time Palm fan and user, what do you do, what do you hope they listen to when you try to bestow some of your consumer wisdom on them?  Palm has gotten extremely tight lipped about coming devices, and I’m afraid that we are a part of the reason for that.  But I want to see something that will make these new BB devices take a back seat for awhile.  I’m not convinced that the 800w is going to be the device to that.

1GB of on-board memory with 128 of Flash and a 2megapixel camera, on a Blackberry?  With HTML email support?  A Touchscreen Blackberry with WiFi debuting on a CDMA network?  A Blackberry Clamshell?  That’s rough competition.  I won’t even go into the 3G iPhone realm.  Right now what’s physical is the Blackberry Bold.  The 800w is in the hands of testers and could still be another quarter or two off, making it’s release right around the same time as a Blackberry codenamed Thunder, supporting widescreen touchscreen.  Is this even a fair fight?  Of course it’s not supposed to be, but how in the world is Palm going to do battle with this sort of onslaught?  

And none of this takes into account what HTC will be releasing, carrying with it virtually the same Windows Mobile on board.  I have to voice this again, I truly fear for Palms future.

What could be said to Ed that would slow the bleeding before the 800w launch.  Then knowing that it will be up against stiff competition, what could or should be said that may help turn the ship around before the end of the year when far more fresh and feature filled devices begin to crowd the market?  

This is really a very disturbing issue for a longtime Palm advocate who really ultimately wants to see Palm innovate, lead and just plain do well.  But from this ringside vantage point, isn’t looking like a fair fight any longer.
